Musician Minh Khang was born in 1978, long famous for hits such as Rainbow Defect, Meteor Shower ... In addition, he made headlines when he married model Thuy Hanh in 2007.
14-year-old orphaned by both parents, rolling into a life of livelihood
Few people know that, before having a full life like the present, the musician had to go through a difficult childhood.
Minh Khang said: "When I was 10 years old, my father went away, and my mother sent me to study the piano at church. The house was then just my parents. Dad went away for a while, Hai also went to the army, there was only a 10-year-old boy at home, so when someone came to hire me to paint, I was "mobilized" to work.
The first money Khang earned was painting a "Duck porridge" sign for a restaurant in Ward 5, District 3 at the age of 10. Zheng Kang carried a brush and climbed the painting ladder. That word still remains. I remember when I finished painting that duck porridge sign, the owner gave me a lot of money.
Four years later, my mother died. At 14 years old, he was helpless. But during his 4 years without his father, learning the piano and performing in the church gave him the capital to live to earn a living.
Because painting doesn't make a lot of money, it just helps me with change and porridge through the day. In the morning I go to school, in the afternoon I go to play for parties, anniversaries, funerals, weddings.
I remember one afternoon, around half-past 3, a long-haired, bearded man running into the school. I was in 6th grade that year.
He told the headmistress, "You let him go and get some money." The girls who saw him with such a beard were scared and had a grudge. After that, everyone in the school said I played with Gypsies. In those days, people didn't understand that being a musician was what it should be.
Although I knew my aunts and friends looked at me differently, I had to work to earn some money. If not, what to eat, what to live?
I remember that every time I played the piano for a wedding party in Cho Lon, Soai Kinh Lam area in District 5, one night the tip was stacked half a meter high. It was around 1991.
Although it was a lot, by the end of the party, the money was divided among hundreds of people who made more than a dozen weddings, so I only had two sheets left. At that time, the money for playing a night was 5,000 VND, the whole tip was about 15,000 VND, every day many were given four 5,000 bills was two tens of thousands.
I kept running shows like that, wedding ghosts were there. The first big show I did was about 8 to 10 years after my mom died. It was director Tat My Loan's show "Fairy Age", at that time the show was jammed with organists so I was invited in.
At the end of the show, I received ten million in money. It was 2000, and ten million was huge, about two and a half gold trees. If calculated now, it is equivalent to 100 million VND.
With those ten million, I went to put a tombstone for my mother. My mother's grave so many years ago was just earth fungus. When I had money, I built my mother's grave beautifully and well-groomed.
Since then, I've done everything smoothly. I believe one thing that everyone, living must be mindful and piety with their parents, they will bless them. And after that, she enlightened me, doing anything worked."
Not giving up, determined to escape poverty
The musician added: "I was young so I came up with ways to do things, ways to survive. If you give up because of sadness in circumstances, will you be happy? I think not.
I will help my parents take care of, nurture and teach me while I am still alive. Therefore, I was determined to find a way out of poverty.
I walked up every step, from playing funerals, weddings, parties to stages like the Peace Theater, Rex Hotel... Walking into the big stage, I stopped playing for the wedding restaurant. From there, I had the opportunity to meet the big brothers. Because of good hitting should be brought into the studio.
At first being a soldier was very enjoyable. At that time, Bao Tuan and Bao Phuc were very hot names. Then I thought I had to be more creative, practice, improve.
As a musician, I wanted to move up to mixing. I checked it all, the mixers at the time were just counting on their fingers.
I checked so that I didn't have the same color as anyone else and to follow my own distinct path. And to do that, I'm idealistic about having parents who enlighten me.
But every profession must suffer hard work to succeed. I believe that, before apprenticeship, you should learn professional ethics. I see the work ethic of many young singers, songwriters, artists now going down.
In the old days, to achieve something, an artist had to trade sweat, tears, even blood. For now, success comes too easily. Even overnight, you become a star.
In the old days it was hard to have success, to keep succeeding was even harder. But thanks to that, the artists who used to resonate in the past, are now still loved by the audience. When young artists rise to fame too quickly, they can't control themselves.
People say I'm benign, I don't quarrel with anyone, but at work it's incredibly difficult. I think that if you spend a part, you will require someone else to give up twice.
Partly for them and partly for me. Because the audience that looks at that person will also watch me... So prestige and quality must be the No. 1 preserved thing."
