Kpop continues to be "absent" from the 2025 Grammys, even though many big names such as BTS and BLACKPINK have submitted nominations. This raises controversy about whether Kpop's absence is because of the too high standards that BTS has created for Korean artists.
Since the 2025 Grammys announced the nomination list in November last year, K-pop fans have been disappointed that there aren't any names from the Korean music industry. It is worth mentioning that even big stars such as BLACKPINK, SEVENTEEN, Stray Kids... are also not on the nomination list, although they have had hugely successful music products around the globe. All these efforts still don't seem to be enough for the Grammys to recognize.
This is really surprising, as the year before, BTS was still the only representative of Kpop to receive a Grammy nomination. So the question is: why is Kpop ignored in a prestigious music award like the Grammys? One of the main answers is due to the influence of BTS, and it can be said that it is this group that has raised too high expectations for other K-pop artists.
BTS, for three consecutive years (2021-2023), has received recognition at the Grammys, creating an unprecedented feat for the Korean music industry. However, this creates too much pressure on other K-pop artists.
When a group like BTS can be constantly nominated and have a chance to win, it is unfortunate that other groups like BLACKPINK or Stray Kids cannot reach the Grammys, but it is understandable. These groups have not reached the level of global influence that BTS has, despite a lot of efforts.
Kpop is not an easy genre of music to be recognized in international competitions. Many industry experts believe that differences in culture, performance style, and music have created a gap between Kpop and other genres of music. Although K-pop has exported Korean culture to the world and has a large number of loyal fans, K-pop music still faces skepticism from experts.
Although this year continues to be an "empty-handed" Grammy season for Kpop, industry experts still believe that this is not the end for Korean music at major tournaments. Some argue that no K-pop group has reached the global reach of BTS, and that having a Korean group nominated three times in a row is rare, like a miracle.
Despite the difficulties, Kpop is still making strong strides in the international music market. Groups such as BLACKPINK, SEVENTEEN, Stray Kids, and BTS are all growing in the U.S., with spectacular performances at major stadiums. This shows that, despite not being recognized by the Grammys this year, K-pop will not stop and will continue to fight for dominance on the international stage.
Moreover, the Grammys' Academy of Music is also making efforts to reform and diversify the nominations. Inviting The Weeknd back to perform after being boycotted in 2021 is a testament to the Grammys' positive changes in recognizing and celebrating different genres of music. This could be an opportunity for Kpop to continue to participate and win at major music awards in the future.
With the growing influence of K-pop globally, the absence of any Kpop representatives at the 2025 Grammys is definitely a pity for fans. However, this does not mean that K-pop will forever be ignored. BTS's success over the years is a testament to the ability of Korean music to overcome language and cultural barriers. Therefore, although it has not been recognized at this year's Grammys, the future of Kpop at prestigious music awards is still very open.
