Recently on December 8, female singer KG, a member of VCHA, a gir.l group founded and managed by JYP Entertainment, officially announced her departure from VCHA and filed a lawsuit against JYP on the show A2K. In the confessions posted on social media, KG revealed the reason she left JYP because the company's employees had excessive behavior and words, even harsh words, insulting the artists under the company. The female singer also shocked Korean showbiz when she said that in the VCHA group, there was a member who had suicidal thoughts due to the unstable environment, which affected the spirit of the whole group.
"I also do not support an environment that encourages eating disorders and causes members to self-harm. I made this decision in May and am still waiting for my contract to be terminated. I worry about the girls who are still in VCHA, my friends, people I truly love and care about," the singer confided.
KG added that JYP Entertainment took advantage of loopholes in California law, using the title of "trainee" to pay low salaries and limit the rights of group members. When drafting the contract, JYP used many Korean words but did not explain them clearly to the group, leading to VCHA signing the contract in a state of confusion, not understanding the contract.
The female artist was only paid $500 (VND 12.6 million) per week. The company explained that they were deducting it from VCHA's trainee debt. This debt amounted to more than $500,000 (VND 12.6 billion) for each member. Notably, JYP imposed fixed costs instead of giving VCHA members a choice. They bought a house worth $2.5 million (VND 63.4 billion), forced the group to live together, and charged this cost to the members' debt.
Another problem is that although VCHA performs a lot, even opening for TWICE's US tour, they are not paid properly. The company told KG that she has not yet generated revenue for the company and still owes $504,503 (12.8 billion VND) after deducting net profit.
The group was also forced to maintain an extremely skinny body and was often only given a small amount of salad. The members were banned from eating by JYP staff on multiple occasions. Not only at the company, VCHA was also monitored at their residence. The company installed surveillance cameras to control the members' eating habits. It is worth noting that the group was unaware of this. Initially, JYP promised that they would not install surveillance cameras at VCHA's residence. The group was also required to report details on their weekly days off and Sundays, such as where they went, what they did, and who they were with.
Furthermore, during a dance practice, KG was scolded for dancing incorrectly and forced to do the move hundreds of times. She was not allowed to drink water until she danced correctly. This resulted in KG tearing her shoulder tendon. Although the doctor ordered the female Idol to rest, the staff still forced her to practice dancing.
The other members also suffered from injuries during training, such as ankle sprains. They still had to practice dancing 12 hours a day under the supervision of JYP Entertainment staff. KG also had laryngitis, but she was scolded. The staff said that it was KG's responsibility not to get sick.
The VCHA group, under the management company's bad treatment, had mental instability. In the petition, KG said that one member started to self-harm, another member had an eating disorder and had suicidal thoughts, fortunately they discovered and saved him in time. Luckily, this member was found in time. Of course, JYP company could not make this public and found another reason along with forcing the group members to lie according to what had been arranged.
"I am grateful for the friendships I have made and the wonderful opportunity to perform for a global audience. Thank you to my fans for your love and support, and I hope you continue to show your support for VCHA," the singer said, adding that she will continue to pursue her passion for music and hopes that K-pop trainees and idols will have better welfare and protection in the future.
Following KG's confession on December 8, a JYP Entertainment employee spoke up saying that they had not received any official complaint from KG and were still in the process of verifying the incident. There were also sources saying that JYP was working with KG's legal representative and would handle the matter according to legal procedures.
