Despicable Me 4 brings the audience a summer full of laughter and "silly" situations that are hard to handle. The movie remains the same but adds many new things that make viewers unable to take their eyes off the screen.
"Despicable Me 4" continues to follow Gru, his family and the banana yellow Minions on unexpected adventures. If the previous parts brought a former villain Gru, gradually learning to become a father, then in this part, Gru has officially entered a new stage of life: becoming a father to a new son, Gru Junior, while continuing to face the funny and sad situations that family life brings.
The story begins with a celebration at the villain school, where Gru reunites with his old enemy Maxime Le Mal. This meeting is not simple, when Maxime decides to escape from prison and plans to take revenge on Gru. After Gru's family has to flee from the pursuit of the enemy, they have to start a new life in Mayflower Town. Here, Gru must not only protect his family from Maxime's pursuit, but also solve difficult situations with his son Gru Junior, who has not yet fully integrated into the new family life.
The plot of this installment remains as fun and humorous as ever, but sometimes it seems to be trying to do too much. The complex storylines and intertwined situations can be a bit confusing. Some scenes drag on without any clear development, and at times, the film feels a bit unbalanced in terms of character development.
However, this part still creates freshness thanks to the added characters and relationships. Gru Junior, Gru's son, is a notable highlight. His cuteness and innocence will melt the audience's hearts immediately. However, the relationship between Gru and Junior is not entirely smooth. Junior, although loving his mother, has a certain prejudice against his father, which creates situations that are both funny and sad, but also touching. The moments when Gru tries to get to know his son not only bring laughter, but also contain small lessons about father-son love and family love.
In addition, the appearance of Poppy Preston - the new neighbor gir.l of Gru's family - is also a highlight in the film. Poppy dreams of becoming a villain, and she is not afraid to use any tricks to lure Gru into crazy thefts. The combination of Poppy and Gru, with "unexpected" situations, makes viewers unable to help but laugh. However, the character Poppy sometimes "occupies space" in the story, making some viewers feel that Gru's three daughters are overshadowed and lack appearance.
It is impossible not to mention Maxime Le Mal, the main villain of this part. Maxime brings a different villain model compared to the old enemies that Gru faced in the previous parts. Equipped with the ability to transform into an insect and owning a giant flying ship, Maxime is a real danger. However, what makes Maxime different is his sinister but no less humorous personality. His plots make the audience feel tense but also unable to hold back laughter because of the way he executes them too much and silly.
Notably, Maxime not only has to confront Gru but also has to deal with an organization called AVL (Anti-Villain League) that is urgently hunting him down. The birth of Mega Minions, the super versions of Minions, is one of the notable highlights of the film. Despite possessing superpowers such as laser shootin.g, body stretching or flying, Mega Minions still maintain their characteristic "silly" style, making each of their appearances bring refreshing laughter to the audience.
One of the strengths of Despicable Me 4 is the visuals. The characters in the film are meticulously designed, from the cute Minions to the details in each scene. The images of Gru, Lucy, the girls and Gru Junior are all sharp and cute. The action scenes, from the chases to the "super naughty" fights of the Mega Minions, are all carefully invested, bringing beautiful and satisfying visual experiences.
In addition, the sound is also very carefully crafted, with unique, vibrant music that matches the fun atmosphere of the film. The voice acting of the actors is also very consistent with each character, especially Steve Carell's performance as Gru and the Minions.
In conclusion, Despicable Me 4 is a very worthwhile animated film if you are looking for a fun, light-hearted summertime treat. Although there are some flaws, especially when the story is somewhat "bloated" with too many unnecessary characters and details, the film still retains its appeal thanks to the charm of Gru's family, the Minions, and the funny situations. If you love fun adventures with lovable characters, then this is the film you cannot miss.
