Jennie releases new single ExtraL featuring Doechii, marking the third track from her upcoming album Ruby due out in March. The song combines Doechii's signature hip-hop beats with the BlackPink member's signature pop style.
In the MV directed by Lyrical Lemonade (Cole Bennett), Jennie and Doechii appear in white pantsuits, striking poses with the lyrics: "Do my, do my ladies run this, ladies run this?" (Roughly translated: My girls run this game). In particular, Jennie is bold when wearing revealing underwear, creating a unique robot image.
The song was produced by Dem Jointz - a producer who has collaborated with Christina Aguilera, Brandy, Kanye West, as well as many Kpop artists such as NCT 127 and Aespa.
Jennie's new product received many positive reviews, the featured guest overshadowed the main artist. Thebiaslist commented, Doechii brought explosive energy in the second verse, the "money" part of the song was much better than the repeated "do my ladies run this?" hook, and also provided a necessary change of pace to keep the song interesting.
"Overall, ExtraL is like a collection of memorable pieces assembled to create edgy music - an upgraded version of the powerful songs that made BlackPink famous" - Thebiaslist wrote.
The MV ExtraL not only impresses with its strong, individualistic visuals, but also attracts with its challenging message. At first listen, the song seems gentle and inspiring, but when delving into the lyrics, listeners can clearly feel the sharpness and strong symbolism in each line.
Jennie did not hesitate to send a straightforward response to those who criticized the female singer. The line "I'm not here to please men" is a declaration affirming Jennie's independence and strength, and can also be a reaction to the criticism that people call her a "pick-me girl" - a term for girls who seek attention from men.
Another line like "This is for my girls who don't have sponsors, they have their own financial resources" is said to hint at BLACKPINK establishing their own company after their contract with YG Entertainment ended, showing financial independence without relying on anyone.
Not stopping there, Jennie also implicitly criticized the harsh rules she endured while under YG with the challenging lyrics: "Saying, 'F**k your rules', is the mood, damn, right".
The lyrics "bussin' a new chain" can be understood as an affirmation of BLACKPINK's solid position in the world music industry, while also refuting the controversy about whether the group is truly the pioneers of global Kpop.
After leaving YG and releasing her own music, Jennie gradually affirmed her position with the album Ruby, which had 15 songs and brought together famous guests such as Childish Gambino, Dua Lipa, Dominic Fike, FKJ and Kali Uchis.
ExtraL is the third single from Jennie's debut solo album, and the first to be released under her own label, Odd Atelier, in collaboration with Columbia Records. Jennie previously released Mantra in October 2024 and Love Hangover in collaboration with Fike in January.
In addition to her solo career, Jennie will soon return to the stage with BlackPink on their international tour this summer. The group will hold large-scale shows in 10 cities around the world, including stops in North America such as Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, and Toronto.
The tour kicks off with two shows in Seoul, South Korea on July 5-6, then continues to North America with big stages such as SoFi Stadium (Los Angeles) on July 12, Soldier Field Stadium (Chicago) on July 18, Rogers Stadium (Toronto) on July 22, and Citi Field (New York) on July 26.
