Located in Do Son ward (Hai Phong), Mau Vung Temple is not only a sacred place for praying for peace. With the legend of three pieces of wood sprouting and the grand festival scheduled for April 2026, it promises to be a focal point of spiritual tourism in the coastal region.
Legends from the sea and the heritage of "Nhan Tho Linh Tu"
The Mẫu Vừng Temple (also known as Nhân Thọ Linh Từ) was built in the 18th century on a mulberry field by the sea. The temple is associated with the worship of Mẫu Liễu Hạnh - an immortal saint in the Vietnamese psyche.
The most captivating aspect is the legend surrounding the temple's formation. According to legend, on a stormy night, three rotten logs drifted upstream from the sea onto a mulberry field, suddenly sprouting and blooming with vibrant red flowers. This legend became even more mysterious when a childless official, after receiving a dream, built a shrine here to pray for a child and his wish was granted. From then on, the good news spread far and wide, and the people of the coastal region revered the Holy Mother as "The First Heavenly Immortal."
Today, the remains of those three logs from the past have transformed into an ancient Barringtonia tree stretching out in front of the temple, becoming a vibrant symbol associated with the Vung hamlet for the local people.
Historical landmarks and precious artifacts
Despite enduring the vicissitudes of war and the harshness of natural disasters in this remote and windswept location, the Mẫu Vừng Temple has preserved its ancient character in the shape of the Vietnamese character "Đinh". It currently houses many precious artifacts from the Nguyễn dynasty, such as ancient bronze incense burners, exquisitely crafted bronze bells, and distinctive artistic carvings.
Beyond its spiritual significance, during the resistance against the French, the temple served as a secret base sheltering revolutionary cadres, contributing to the glorious history of the Do Son region.
