Not just an ordinary horror film, "At the Bottom of the Lake" by director Tran Huu Tan is a deep psychological cinematic experience, where fear does not come from creepy images but from repressed emotions, forgotten pasts, and rejected egos.
Inspired by the urban legends around Da Lake, University Village â a place familiar to students â the film leads the audience to a space that is both intimate and creepy. Layers of buried memories are awakened in the context of a deep lake, creating a psychological labyrinth where real and virtual, people and "dual identities" intersect and struggle.
The highlight of the film lies in the exploitation of the concept of doppelgänger â evil copies born from within each person. This is a rare direction in Vietnamese cinema, and the film uses this theme to ask an important question: What happens when we are force.d to face our own dark side?
The story takes place in an ancient rock lake in Ba Ria â Vung Tau, which has a wild beauty but is also full of danger. The underwater scenes are delicately processed, with the image of moss wrapped around the legs, the shadow of a person mixed under the surface of the lake creates a suffocating feeling like the character's own heart is being dragged to the bottom. Sound effects â from the sound of running water to echoes in a quiet space â contribute to the cold, uneasy atmosphere that pervades the entire film.
Director Tran Huu Tan chooses a slow pace at the beginning, like a quiet lake, then slowly leads the viewer into the depth of emotion and obsession. Jumpscare is maximally restrained, instead of a build-up of suffocating sensations through each frame. The climax of the film is strongly pushed up at the end, when the "twin identities" begin to appear, causing chaos and dragging the characters into a suffocating confrontation of survival.
The young but hardworking cast has contributed to the soul of the film. Karen Nguyen has an impressive transformation as Tu â the central character containing many layers of emotions. She is not afraid to roll over, learn to swim and dive to show realistic underwater scenes, and especially shows the inner transformation between a happy appearance and inner pai.n. Thanh Duy surprised with her multi-dimensional role: a simple guy during the day, a personality drag queen at night. Kay Tran, even though he is a horizontal hand, still shows the dust of life, love and "eating" with his two co-stars. Nguyen Thao, although he did not appear much, still left his mark on the role of Yen â the key holder of the mysterious lake.
A special feature of the film is the way it builds the image of a twin moss â not only haunting but also highly symbolic. Moss wraps around the characters' legs, dragging them to the bottom of the lake like unhealed psychological scars. The enemy in the movie is not the devil, but the forgotten past, the self that we always avoid. The battle between the character and the "other being" is a struggle with the ego, making the film not only scary but also contemplative.
Visually and soundly, the film handles water, light, and color effects well. The cold blue tones throughout, creating a feeling of weight, the darkness at the bottom of the lake becomes a metaphor for the confused mind. The sound of water, the whistling wind, and the terrifying silence in the film are effectively used to increase the suspense without being overly intimidating.
Overall, "At the Bottom of the Lake" is a bold and remarkable step of Vietnamese cinema in the horror â psychological film genre. More than merely intimidating, the film opens up a space for the audience to contemplate themselves: that the scariest enemy lies not on the outside, but the pai.n that has not been faced inside each person.
The film premieres nationwide on June 6 â and the question for viewers: Are you ready to dive to the bottom of your own lake?
