Recently, social media has been buzzing about videos of female TikToker Viet Phuong Thoa sharing about complications when beautifying. She said she was tricked into injecting liquid silicone into her face by mistake.
Specifically, according to this TikToker, 6 years ago, she was sponsored by a beauty salon to inject filler for free. After that, her face had no problems until 6 months ago she noticed that her cheeks showed signs of swelling.
Initially, on examination the doctor diagnoses inflammation of the jaw myositis and gives therapeutic drugs. After that, Viet Phuong Dao's face was less swollen, but there was a hard mass on both cheeks.
"Thinking I had injected filler before, I went for a filler injection. However, after a thorough examination, the doctor informed me that there was no filler and that I was injected with silicone in the face by that salon.
At this point I realized I had been tricked into injecting silicone. If I knew it was silicone, I would never have injected it," the TikToker shared in the clip.
At the hospital, she was admitted to the hospital to remove silicone from her face because of her severe condition, suffering from an abscess. Even if the condition worsens, it will lead to necrosis, surgical removal must be handled.
Liquid silicon is prohibited for use in human injections
Silicon is a polymeric substance that has many applications in today's life, in which liquid silicone is often called artificial grease, previously often used to fill subcutaneous gaps, and also used in plastic surgery. Millions of people around the world have pumped liquid silicone for beauty refurbishment.
Since 1965, people have begun to recognize the dangerous complications of injecting liquid silicone into the human body, characterized by the appearance of granulomas. At the same time, there were reports of suspected autoimmune diseases and other complications in Japanese women who used direct breast injections.
In 1991, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) put liquid silicon on its banned list. In 1995, the Ministry of Health of our country issued a ban on silicone injections directly into parts of the body. But there is still a situation where some underground beauty establishments use industrial silicon - absolutely not used on humans as fillers.
Sharing about this female TikToker's complications, TS.BS Tong Hai, head of the Department of Microsurgery and Reconstruction, Center for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, National Burn Hospital (Hanoi), said liquid gel silicone is a banned substance for use on the human body in the form of direct injection into the body.
Dr. Hai stated that when injected into the body, liquid silicon can cause acute complications such as red inflammation at the injection site, causing pain, causing embolism (when pumped into the blood vessel), causing bad protrusion (when injected in the wrong place or assigned to the wrong injection area), allergies (rare).
In addition, the victim may experience distant complications such as deformation of the injection area, causing tissue invasion, necrotizing ulcerative inflammation, prolonged purulent discharge.
"Silicon when entering the body will move to compress nerves, blood vessels causing spasms, facial deformities or necrosis of fluid and pus. This case requires surgical intervention treatment, removal.
The surgery requires complete removal, so doctors will have to remove fibrous tissue with silicon. As a result, part or all of the muscle infiltrated by silicone may have to be removed, resulting in only skin and a little stromal tissue.
Currently, doctors have enough techniques and technologies to repair and beautify the damaged area after silicone removal," said Dr. Hai.
According to Dr. Hai, depending on the time of complications, the extent and effects of silicone, doctors can handle accordingly. For example, for lips, doctors only intervene when there are complications.
With other areas such as chin, cheeks, chest, silicone tissue can be removed from the appearance of deformity, not yet necrosis.
The doctor also recommends that, when there is a need to inject fillers, it is necessary to use products that have been licensed by regulatory agencies, knowing the type of substance injected into the body.
In particular, it is necessary to select licensed facilities, experienced skilled doctors, specializing in plastic and cosmetic surgery to do.
Concurring, Assoc. Dr. Vu Ngoc Lam recommends: when going to beauty, women need to be alert, never inject fillers that they do not know what substances, do not listen to the invitations of friends and relatives to unreputable beauty establishments to beautify. If you want to inject fillers for beauty, you should choose hospitals with cosmetic specialties to perform. Because fillers must be professionally trained cosmetologists, professional certificates, and licensed cosmetologists to be able to do so.
Before injecting the permitted filler, beauticians need to pay attention to the composition indicated on the drug case. Specifically, HA (Organic Hyaluronic Acid), when seeing that the composition has silicon, absolutely should not be used. In addition, it is necessary to clearly read the information about the manufacturer, expiry date to ensure that the product is licensed for circulation in Vietnam.
