After Jennie's new single " ExtraL" was released, besides the attention focused on the artist herself, people were also interested in the piece that helped complete the hit song - Doechii.
At noon on February 21 (Vietnam time), Jennie released the third single from her debut album RUBY - ExtraL. Accompanying the global female idol this time is Doechii - a Gen Z rapper who is making an impression in the US with his extremely "sharp" rap style, catchy and trendy music.
Together with Doechii, Jennie inspires women to confidently do whatever they want, breaking the rules. The collaboration is so smooth, the duo is causing a stir on social networks, the MV ExtraL quickly reached more than 1.7 million views after only 3 hours of airing, promising to "break" the digital music charts in the near future.
From here, Doechii caught the attention of many people, especially Kpop fans. "Internet detectives" also began to investigate this cool female rapper. The results showed that her real name is Jaylah Ji'mya Hickmon, born on August 14, 1998 in Tampa, Florida, USA.
Doechii comes from a family where both her father and uncle are rappers, so she was expose.d to hip-hop at a young ag.e. In high school, she set her sights on the Howard W. Blake School of the Arts, which opened the door to ballet, acting, cheerleading, gymnastics, and soccer.
She planned to become a professional choir singer until a friend encouraged her to produce and release music online as an independent artist. In 2016, Doechii released her first self-written song "Girls" to SoundCloud.
In 2019, one of Doechii's first projects, Coven Music Session, Vol. 1, was released. In 2020, she released her debut EP "Oh the Places You'll Go". It was described by Rolling Stone as a fusion of pop, dance, and hip hop.
In September of the same year, Doechii released a single titled "Yucky Blucky Fruitcake", which was inspired by The Artist's Way. By 2020, the female rapper started to gain popularity on TikTok with this single. In 2021, she released her second EP "Bra-Less".
In March 2022, Doechii became Capitol Records' first female rapper after signing with the label. That same month, she released "Persuasive", the first single released through Top Dawg Entertainment, and appeared as a featured artist on David Guetta and Afrojack's song "Trampoline", alongside Missy Elliott, Bia.
In April, Doechii released the song "Crazy" with a music video. In August, the rapper released her second EP, She/Her/Black Bitch. In April 2023, Doechii performed at the 22nd Coachella. That same year, she made her acting debut in "Earth Mama," a drama film directed by Savanah Leaf.
2024 was a breakout year for Doechii when she released her debut album "Alligator Bites Never". The album was written from her own experiences, making listeners feel sympathetic and understood. Songs like "Denial is a River" about the rapper's struggles with depression and addiction were warmly received by rap fans.
"Alligator Bites Never Heal" received a score of 79/100 on Metacritic (a site that aggregates music critics' reviews). Rolling Stone magazine commented that Doechii has a flexible rap style, influenced by RnB style. Doechii believes that his rap music will be "the new Hip-hop".
The effort paid off, "Alligator Bites Never Heal" was officially named in the Best Rap Album category at the 2025 Grammys. Doechii bea.t out names like Eminem and J. Cole to take home her first golden trumpet in her career. She is the third female rapper in Grammy history to win Best Rap Album, after Lauryn Hill and Cardi B.
In her acceptance speech, Doechii moved the world by sending a message to the black female community: "I poured my heart and soul into this mixtape. I expose.d my life, my pain and my struggles. I gave it my all and God said I would be rewarded. I know there are a lot of black women watching me right now, and I want to say, 'You can do it. Don't let anyone put any stereotype on you.'"
Few people know that Doechii's early days with music were extremely difficult. Like any young talent, the female rapper had to find her own opportunities to "survive" in the harsh entertainment industry like America. In a clip posted on her personal Youtube page, the littl.e gir.l sadly shared, "Today I was fired from my current job. Thank God."
Doechii is unemployed, and has a history of drug abus.e and alcoholism. The female rapper is also not afraid to openly admit her sexual orientation, that she is bisexual. Because of this, she was discriminated against in her hometown. Having gone through enough shocks when she was only a teenager, Doechii clearly realized that she could not let herself be swept away.
Currently, the female rapper focuses on music, avoiding alcohol and stimulants. In an interview, Doechii emphasized: "My projects do not come from alcohol, beer, stimulants or parties. It comes from the days of sitting barefoot in the studio working with eyes rolled back."
From a gir.l growing up in a small town in the US, facing a series of psychological crises, addiction and unemployment, Doechii has come a long way to hold the prestigious golden trumpet in her hands. American media commented that after the 2025 Grammy, Doechii's name will go further. Contributing her voice to Jennie's new rap song, Doechii has proven her formidable rapping ability, the perfect highlight to help the BLACKPINK member perfect her product.
