On Douyin China, there has been a trend of young girls taking maternity photos in recent days. While Gen Z seems to be supportive of this trend, parents and the elderly are worried about many things.
A new trend is spreading on social media in China, in which young, single, non-pregnant women wear fake bellies to take maternity photos before giving birth.
The "fake maternity photoshoot" craze has become the center of attention in China after a video by Meizi Gege, a Gen Z influencer from Hunan Province with over 5.7 million followers. On October 13, a TikToker named Meizi Gege shared photos taken during a maternity photoshoot showing off her slim figure and youthful appearance, making many people exclaim.
âWhen I was still slim, I wore a fake belly for maternity shoots and enjoyed the made-up life. I even did it with my best friend!â the influencer said. In the video, the photographer attaches accessories to her, while another person helps her create the âfake belly,â after which she proudly shows off her perfect figure.
Many young girls immediately imitated Meizi Geg and the trend of taking fake pregnant belly photos was born. "I learned something new. I will buy a fake belly and take maternity photos when my body is still the slimmest!"; "How can people think of such a clever way!"..., girls commented when watching the video. A 26-year-old girl who just graduated from university said that she took maternity photos at the age of 23 even though she was not married. Many other young girls also revealed that they took wedding photos at the age of 22, in case they had wrinkles when they were 30.
To follow the trend, all they need is a fake belly, which is available online in different sizes corresponding to the early, middle and late stages of pregnancy. The popularity of this trend comes from the desire of women to have perfect maternity photos, which, apart from the protruding belly, still have an attractive slim body.
The "fake maternity photoshoot" craze has sparked humorous and heated discussions on social media. "I'll take photos to celebrate my 70th birthday and post them on social media later, I'll look much younger!", one person said; "I'll take time to arrange my funeral photos before I die," another joked; "I should take more photos when I'm young, so I can use them for online dating when I'm older," another commented.
The incident has left many Chinese parents puzzled, wondering why "being single and pregnant", once considered shameful in traditional Chinese culture, has now become popular among Generation Z. While single Chinese Gen Z girls are rushing to take fake pregnant belly photos before they become old, many have expressed concern that the trend imposes a "white, thin and young" beauty standard and puts real pregnant women under excessive stress and anxiety about their appearance. According to them, the photos seem to imply that women must maintain a youthful, slim figure during pregnancy, an unrealistic expectation.

The country continues to see a trend of low marriage rates and falling birth rates. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, only 4.75 million couples registered their marriages in the first nine months of 2024.
