Through the novel Kim Dung, people still remember Doan Chi Binh as a petty person. However, in real life, Doan Chi Binh is not that bad, even his personality is completely opposite from the story.
In the two novels The Condor Heroes and The Condor Heroes of the late writer Kim Dung, the appearances of Doan Chi Binh can only be counted on the fingers. This character is described in a faint way, a mediocre martial artist, not participating in the landslide battles of martial arts masters. Doan Chi Binh's most notable and infuriating action was to steal Tieu Long Nu's innocence when she was hit by acupressure points, unable to move.
In the novel The Condor Heroes, Doan Chi Binh is a disciple of Khau Xu Co. This character is described as being mediocre, docile, loved by his parents. Khau Xu Co assigned Doan Chi Binh to go to Mongolia to remind Quach Tinh about the contest with Duong Khang upstairs Yen Vu.
When meeting Quach Tinh, Doan Chi Binh showed his eagerness to win, so he was taught a lesson by Quach Tinh's master, Kha Tran Evil.
In the novel The Condor Heroes, Doan Chi Binh appears more often. This character is described as an honest person who plays very well with brother Trieu Chi Kinh - who often bullies Duong Qua.
When admiring the "fairy" beauty of Tieu Long Nu, Doan Chi Binh is a Taoist but has adultery blood. Taking advantage of when Tieu Long Nu was targeted by Western Poison Au Duong Phong, Doan Chi Binh pretended to be Duong Qua, blindfolded her and then played a depraved game. He then had to flee everywhere due to being hunted by "Miss Co".
During the great battle at Trung Duong Cung, Toan Chan faction, when being exposed by Tieu Long Nu, Doan Chi Binh regretted his actions, so he withdrew his sword and committed suicide.
It can be said that through the novel Kim Dung, people still remember Doan Chi Binh as a petty person who did bad things when people were in danger. Taking advantage of the time when Tieu Long Nu had acupressure points, she couldn't move her limbs, in the absence of people, Doan Chi Binh stole the "thousand of gold". However, in real life, this is a completely opposite character from Kim Dung's swordplay.
Few people know that Doan Chi Binh is a real person in history. However, the Toan Chan Taoist Doan Chi Binh in real life is far different from novels and movies.
Doan Chi Binh (1169 - 1251) was a person living in the Northern Song Dynasty (at the same time as the happenings in the two novels Hero of the Condor and the Condor Heroes). From an early age, Doan Chi Binh proved to be a fan of Taoism and was famously intelligent. He has a very good memory and can learn 1,000 words in a day.
However, Doan Chi Binh's family has a tradition of being a mandarin. Father Doan Chi Binh hated his son becoming a Taoist so many times locked him in the house, forbidden to interact with the outside.
Contrary to his father's desire to compete for fame, Doan Chi Binh left home many times to find famous teachers to study religion. In 1182, Doan Chi Binh met Ma Ngoc - a Taoist Toan Chan sect.
Ma Ngoc is also a character appearing in Kim Dung's novel of swordplay. He is described as a friendly person and used to teach qigong to Guo Jing.
After meeting Ma Ngoc, Doan Chi Binh's determination to become a Taoist was further strengthened. He left his hometown in Shandong and went to Luoyang to find Liu Xuxuan - a disciple of Wang Chongyang's Toan Chan sect - to worship him.
Toan Zhenism was the most famous sect in China at that time, founded by Wang Chongyang (also a real historical figure, included in the story of Jin Yong).
According to the Chinese Taoist History, Doan Chi Binh has the name Thanh Hoa Tu. He used to go to Xi'an as a missionary and to Foshan to take care of the poor and sick. The reputation of the young Taoist Doan Chi Binh resonated far and wide and was respected by many people.
In 1191, Doan Chi Binh worshiped Khau Xu Co - arguably the most prominent disciple of Vuong Trung Duong - as his master. On the missionary path throughout China, Doan Chi Binh learned a lot of knowledge from Khau Xu Co.
According to the secret history of Mongolia, in 1220, Doan Chi Binh and Khau Xu Co went to Genghis Khan to discuss the magic of longevity.
During the meeting, Khau Xu Co was praised by Genghis Khan as a fairy, appointed as the Great Grandmaster, and had full control over Taoism in the world. Genghis Khan also cut many of the lands he captured and donated to the Toan Chan religion. Therefore, the Toan Chan school flourished during the Song - Yuan period.
During the difficult journey to meet Genghis Khan, Doan Chi Binh was praised by Khau Xu Co as having the most bravery and understanding among the 18 disciples accompanying him.
In 1227, when Khau Xu Co died, the position of master was passed on to Doan Chi Binh - the third most prominent disciple of the Toan Chan religion. At this time, Doan Chi Binh was also the most famous Taoist in China. His morality and understanding were respected by both the emperors of the Song and Yuan dynasties.
During the Mong - Song war, Doan Chi Binh focused on helping people in distress and staying out of the war. He was known as a good physician and loved by the people.
Doan Chi Binh then left Tai Chi Palace - the residence of many generations of Toan Chan sect masters - to find a grass hut behind Chung Nam Mountain to practice.
In 1238, Doan Chi Binh insisted on resigning as the head of the Toan Chan sect despite the objections of many disciples. He spent the rest of his life in seclusion and studying Taoism.
It can be seen that in history, Doan Chi Binh was a morally high-minded man who did not care about fame and gain and especially did not indulge in female beauty as described in Kim Dung's swordplay novels.
At Huashan Commenting on Sword - a cultural event held on the top of Huashan Mountain in Shaanxi Province, China in 2003, some Taoists from the Shaanxi Taoist Association prevented the late writer Jin Yong from going up the mountain.
The Taoists were dissatisfied with the writer's defamation of Toan Chan Religion because of the detail that Doan Chi Binh humiliated Tieu Long Nu. The parties intervened, reconciled, and then the Taoists agreed to let the late writer Kim Dung go to the mountain. Therefore, in 2004, the late writer Kim Dung revised the original novel. In the revised version, Toan Chan Giao was described more brilliantly, Doan Chi Binh's name was also changed.
A Taoist researcher once questioned writer Kim Dung about smearing Doan Chi Binh, adversely affecting Taoism. At that time, the writer apologized and said: "Doan Chi Binh has high morals in Taoism. In the revised version, I have corrected this detail. I do not mean to smear Taoism, nor to discriminate against any religion. ".
To show respect to the old man, Kim Dung also asked the film crews to adapt their work to not let the details of "Doan Dai Hiep" have bad behavior with Tieu Long Nu.
