The whole country of Vietnam is united towards the proud 70th anniversary of the victory over Dien Bien Phu, a historical mark that makes the whole world simultaneously throw their hats in admiration, "illustrious five continents, shaking the globe".
In the history of building and holding water of the Vietnamese nation, the victory of Dien Bien Phu "illustrious in five continents, shaking the globe" is one of the dazzling peaks, a glorious feat. In the resistance war against French colonialism, the historic victory of Dien Bien Phu was the greatest victory, dealing a decisive blow, creating a turning point that changed the course of the war directly leading to the signing of the Geneva Accords to end the war and restore peace in Indochina.
Immediately after the victory of the August Revolution, the French colonialists supported by the imperialist powers returned to invade our country. On 19/12/1946, responding to President Ho's call for national resistance, the Vietnamese people bravely entered into a long and arduous resistance war against the invading enemy.
Relying on their own strength, with rudimentary weapons and the spirit of "suicide for the Fatherland", our troops and people in turn defeated the military strategies of the French colonialists. By 1953, we had mastered the battlefields, creating a comparison of forces in our favor. In order to save the situation, in the autumn and winter of 1953, the French colonialists and the American interventionists implemented the Nava Plan to increase the forces and means of war, attempting within 18 months to destroy most of our main army, control the territory of Vietnam, regain the initiative on the battlefield, as a basis for a political solution to continue the occupation for a long time. Upon discovering the direction of our strategic advance into the Northwest, Lai Chau and Upper Laos, the French Expeditionary Command sent paratroopers to occupy Dien Bien Phu and build it into a fortified military base.
On our side, in September 1953, the Politburo met to discuss and decide to launch the winter-spring strategic offensive with the motto: active, proactive, mobile, flexible, destroy enemy life force, foster our forces, choose loopholes and weak places of the enemy to fight, promote guerrilla warfare, Maintain the initiative, forcing the enemy to disperse forces. Our troops and people have coordinated with Lao troops and people, Cambodia has successively launched campaigns and won victories in Lai Chau, Central Highlands, Central Laos, Lower Laos, Upper Laos and Eastern Cambodia, eliminating many enemy life forces, expanding the liberation zone forcing the French army into a situation of strategic passivity, Forces must be dispersed to deal across the battlefields.
Dien Bien Phu is a strategically important stronghold that dominates a large area of Northwest and Upper Laos. Although not originally planned by the Nava Plan, French and American generals strengthened their forces, building Dien Bien Phu into a strong stronghold. There are 16,200 troops including 21 battalions including 17 infantry battalions, 3 artillery battalions, 1 engineer battalion, 1 tank company, 1 air squadron, 1 motorized transport company. Dien Bien Phu Base Group is arranged into 3 Northern, Central and Southern divisions with 49 strongholds, mobilizing all paratroopers and 40% of the most elite French mobile forces in Indochina; Muong Thanh and Hong Flu airfields can transport about 200 to 300 tons of cargo per day and parachute from 100 to 150 troops, ensuring reinforcements during the operation. The Dien Bien Phu Stronghold Group was the strongest French defensive group in Indochina at that time, as "an indestructible fortress", an attractive place to eliminate our main army and a decisive point of the Nava Plan.
On 6/12/1953, the Politburo met and said that the battle against Dien Bien Phu was the largest battle of our army ever and had very important military, political and diplomatic significance. In that spirit, the Politburo decided to launch the Dien Bien Phu Campaign, adopt the operation plan, establish the Operation Command, the Party Committee of the Front with General Vo Nguyen Giap as Commander and Secretary of the Party Committee of the Campaign. The Government decided to establish a Front Supply Council chaired by Comrade Pham Van Dong. All preparations for the operation were carried out urgently with the slogan "All for the front line, all for victory", the main army units quickly assembled, tarpaulined, cut mountains to open the way to tow artillery, build battlefields, and be ready to attack the enemy; Citizens and youths volunteered despite bombs and bullets to ensure logistics for the campaign.
On January 25, 1954, our infantry units were in a position of readiness under the operational motto "hit fast, solve quickly". But realizing that the enemy had strengthened its defensive force, the Command and the Party Committee of the operation made a new decision: to maintain their determination to eliminate the Dien Bien Phu stronghold group, change the motto of the operation to "fight firmly, advance firmly". Implementing the new motto, the decisive battle of Dien Bien Phu took place in 3 waves:
From March 13 to 17, 1954, our troops bravely destroyed Him Lam and Independence Hill, Ban Keo stronghold, broke through the northern gateway of the stronghold group, killed and captured over 2000 enemy enemies, destroyed 25 aircraft, wiped out 1 regiment, threatening Muong Thanh airport.
From March 30 to April 30, 1954, our troops simultaneously attacked the positions east of the central division, tightened the encirclement, divided and continuously attacked, controlled Muong Thanh airfield, limited enemy reinforcements to the base group. This was the longest, longest, fiercest, toughest attack, we and the enemy fought every inch of land, every trench of traffic. Especially at hill C1, we and the enemy struggled for up to 20 days, hill A1 struggled for up to 30 days. After the 2nd attack, the central area of Dien Bien Phu was within range of our artillery, the enemy fell into a state of passivity and high demoralization.
From May 1 to May 7, 1954, our troops captured the eastern positions and launched a general offensive. On the night of May 6th, at hill A1, the battle between us and the enemy was fierce, our troops rushed to destroy each bunker, explode each bunker. The commander of Hill A1 and about 400 surviving enemies surrendered. At 17:30 on May 7, we occupied the central headquarters, General Äu Caxterri, the entire General Staff and soldiers of the Dien Bien Phu stronghold group raised the white flag to surrender. The "decisive battle, decisive victory" flag of our army flew on the roof of the enemy's command bunker. That same night our troops continued to advance on the Southern Division, drove the enemy to Upper Laos, and by 24 hours all the enemy troops had been taken prisoner.
After 55 days and nights of brave, clever and creative fighting, our troops and people destroyed the entire Dien Bien Phu stronghold group, eliminated and captured 16,200 arrows, shot down 62 aircraft, captured 64 cars and all enemy weapons, ammunition, equipment and military equipment. May 7, 1954 became the anniversary of the successful end of the resistance war against French colonialism.
In the history of building and holding water of our nation, the victory of Dien Bien Phu is one of the brilliant peaks, a glorious feat. In the resistance war against French colonialism, the historic victory of Dien Bien Phu was the greatest victory, dealing a decisive blow, creating a turning point that changed the course of the war directly leading to the signing of the Geneva Accords to end the war and restore peace in Indochina.
