Having been on air for over 20 years, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire is not only a familiar intellectual game but also a cherished memory for many generations of viewers.
However, besides the diverse knowledge-based questions, what haunted viewers the most was question number 15 – the final milestone that determined whether the player would reach the "millionaire" title. Notably, throughout the long journey, this question rarely appeared, and each time it did, it left a particularly strong impression.
Recently, public opinion was once again stirred up when contestant Nguyen Truong Giang (33 years old, Hanoi) brilliantly answered 14 questions, bringing the audience closer to question number 15. Throughout the competition, he consistently demonstrated his logical reasoning abilities, especially from question 11 onwards, even after using all his lifelines, he maintained remarkable composure. This created a tense atmosphere in the studio, as the opportunity to see the final question was extremely rare.
Question number 15, presented in this episode, revolved around a familiar but not easy-to-answer historical detail: "The statement: 'On the day of victory, our people will rebuild our country in a more dignified and beautiful way' was mentioned in which document of President Ho Chi Minh?" The options included "Call to the people and soldiers of the whole country," "Call to the entire nation to resist," "Testament," and "The Revolutionary Path." Faced with this question, the contestant decided to stop to preserve the 150 million VND prize money. When given a trial answer, he chose "The Revolutionary Path," but the correct answer was "Call to the people and soldiers of the whole country."
Many considered Truong Giang's decision to stop reasonable, as the seemingly familiar question actually contained a highly tricky element. Not only the contestant, but even the advisory panel offered different answers, demonstrating the true difficulty of the final question. This once again confirms that overcoming question number 15 requires not only knowledge but also absolute certainty – something very difficult to achieve under time pressure and psychological stress.
In fact, this isn't the first time question number 15 has caused regret. In the show's history, this moment has only officially occurred a few times. In 2008, contestant Nguyen Le Anh was the first to reveal question number 15 after answering 14 questions correctly in a row. The question concerned which newspaper published Nam Cao's work "The Superfluous Life." Despite having a hunch about the correct answer, he decided to stop playing and subsequently missed the opportunity to become the first "millionaire."
More than a decade later, in 2021, Tran Dang Dang Khoa recreated this rare moment. Unlike Le Anh, he chose to answer the final question incorrectly, reducing his prize money to 22 million VND. Dang Khoa's story became a prime example of the fine line between risk and safety on the judging panel.
TV presenter Diep Chi shared on her personal page after the show aired: "It's been 5 years since the last time someone reached the 15th question in Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. That day, our team was holding our hearts out because we were so nervous, and host Quoc Khanh seemed to be breathing heavily too... In the final question, when Giang correctly deduced the right direction and eliminated two incorrect options, I had a strong feeling that this would be the first player in Vietnam to win Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. Unfortunately, that didn't happen this time, but I believe it will happen soon."
Below Diep Chi's post, netizens expressed both admiration and regret for Truong Giang's result. This is because Truong Giang had excelled, successfully answering 14 questions, with only one question left to create a miracle.
"This young contestant performed exceptionally well! It's a shame they stopped at question 15, otherwise the show would have been perfect," "Sister! I watched with bated breath for every question, and I felt a little sorry for the contestant at question 15," "A miracle just one step away," "The events were very suspenseful, tense, and dramatic until the very last seconds. I think knowledge and understanding are crucial for participating in the Who Wants to Be a Millionaire game show!",... these are some of the comments from viewers.
