On the afternoon of March 25th, Hanoi University of Science and Technology awarded a certificate of commendation to student Nguyen Le Tu for his courageous act of rushing into a burning building to save people in an emergency. Tu's story quickly spread on social media, becoming a positive symbol.
Nguyen Le Tu is currently a second-year student majoring in Engineering Physics. According to information from the university, immediately after learning that Tu's health was affected by participating in the rescue operation, representatives from the Student Affairs Department and the Youth Union visited the hospital to offer encouragement and present a certificate of commendation from the Board of Directors. In their acknowledgment, the university emphasized that Tu's actions not only demonstrated courage but also spread profound humanitarian values within the student community.
The incident occurred at approximately 5:52 PM on March 24th at a six-story building with a rooftop extension in alley 218, Linh Nam Street, Hanoi. Upon noticing thick black smoke billowing from the second floor, nearby residents quickly raised the alarm and attempted to help. At that moment, Nguyen Le Tu was returning from the gym and passing by the area. Without hesitation, the student immediately rushed to the scene, disregarding the imminent danger.
Initially, Tú stood outside, holding the ladder and helping to evacuate two elderly people from the dangerous area. However, upon hearing that women and children were still trapped inside, he didn't hesitate to climb up, swinging himself across the ladder to reach the burning area. This moment best exemplifies his spirit of "not hesitating in the face of danger"—a quality that many admire when they hear the story again.
Joining Tú in the rescue effort was Nguyễn Tiến Long. In the emergency, both of them climbed onto the burning roof, and he used a hammer to break through the corrugated iron roof to create an escape route for those trapped.
After the story went viral, Nguyen Le Tu spoke out to correct some inaccurate information. The student stated that he was not the one who directly broke the corrugated iron roof, as many previous posts claimed. Tu arrived at the scene later, then climbed up to help rescue the two children still trapped inside, and also helped others find water to extinguish the fire. Sharing about his actions, Tu seemed quite embarrassed by the public attention. The student humbly said, "I don't dare claim to be a hero; I simply saw someone in trouble and went to help."
Recounting the moment he faced the fire, Tú said that the thick smoke, along with the acrid smell and vinegar fumes, made his eyes sting and severely limited his visibility. It took him a while to calm down before he could continue to find his way down to the 6th floor – where people were believed to still be trapped. In the dim light and suffocating smoke, every step was risky, but Tú persevered.
Just then, the fire department arrived at the scene. Thanks to the lights shining from outside, Tu and Long were able to locate the room where people were trapped, and then coordinated to bring the victims out through the emergency exit. Fortunately, all seven people in the house were rescued in time, and there were no casualties.
What touched many people most was that after the incident, Tú didn't tell his family the details. The next morning, when his mother asked him about it, he simply said he had fallen. "I didn't dare say I ran into the fire, I was afraid my mother would worry," Tú shared. This simplicity and humility made the student's actions even more admirable.
Commenting on this action, Associate Professor Pham Thanh Huyen – Head of the Student Affairs Department of the university – said: "This is a beautiful image of the courage and sense of responsibility of the Polytechnic students. Without hesitation in the face of danger, Tu has strongly spread the humanitarian values and bravery of young people in modern society."
Not only is Nguyen Le Tu outstanding for his courageous actions, but he is also described by his teachers and friends as a gentle, diligent student who actively participates in group activities. According to the lecturer in charge of the K69 Engineering Physics class, Tu consistently achieves excellent academic results and is often among the top students in the class. This demonstrates the image of a well-rounded student – not only excelling in his field but also having a sense of responsibility towards the community.
