Borussia Dortmund won away from home against Bayern Munich for the first time in 10 years. Der Klassiker did not disappoint despite not having a title race. The pre-match terror threat increased the police presence in Bavaria.

For the first time in 15 years , watching football Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund meet at Der Klassiker without winning the Bundesliga, Germany's most anticipated clash still attracts the attention of international audiences.

Munich-born Karim Adeymi silenced the 75,000 spectators at the Allianz Arena, including Bollywood star Kartik Aaryan, as the visitors secured their first win in Bavaria in 3,641 days and in their 10th inquiry.

The jubilant celebrations of Dortmund's players after a 2-0 win in front of 5,000 fans on the pitch showed the significance of victory and the match, even without the teams competing for the trophy.

"We lost too long," head coach Edin Terzic told Sky. "But we were extremely pleased with our performance today."

Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl agreed, adding: "In the end it was only 3 points, but of course it was not easy in Munich and it has been 10 years. It's definitely a great feeling."

Decisive match

With Bayer Leverkusen leading by 13 points at the top of the table before kick-off, which saw an increased police presence due to alleged terrorist threats, the lively atmosphere as the match began matched the rivalry between Bayern and Bayern.

"We are disappointed because we feel we do not bring the passion needed to win the game," Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel said after the match. "We have too little when it comes to the basics."

Both teams are at risk, with Dortmund chasing a fourth place and a Champions League place for next season, and Bayern's squad playing for their future, with a new head coach being sought to lead the team next season.

But Edin Turzic's side proved themselves to be the ones who seized the chances, as Adeymi got past Bayern's No. 2 goalkeeper Sven Ulreich early in the first half before Julian Ryerson took all three points when he fired the ball into a high corner late in the first half.

Hummels starred in the 29th 'Klassiker'

Bayern Munich's home dominance over Borussia Dortmund stalled when their loose defence conceded in their 10th consecutive Bundesliga game, a fate they last suffered in the 1980-1981 season.

At the top of the pitch directly opposite football, Dortmund defender Mats Hummels, who spent three seasons with Bayern between 2016-2019 between two caps for BVB, was key to ensuring the visitors stayed away from Bayern's prolific striker Harry Kane.

As Euro 2024 fast approaches, question marks over Hummels' inclusion in Julian Nagelsmann's final 23-man squad have been raised after he was ruled out of recent international friendlies against France and the Netherlands.

But the 35-year-old defended Dortmund's defence firmly as he denied Kane's many clear-cut chances and broke the ball off the touchline to help his side finish fourth in the Bundesliga, three points ahead of RB Leipzig.

Bayern face surprise trophyless season

Beating them all ended Bayern's hopes of overtaking Xabi Alonso's side at the top of the Bundesliga, as they faced a trophyless season for the first time since 2011-2012.

Although the prolific Kane is chasing Robert Lewandowski's record of scoring 41 goals in a season, the €100m England striker is unusual in front of goal.

Bayern's list of superstars across the pitch failed to impress, with former Bayern defender Philipp Lahm admitting that his former side had failed to "build a team".

"The players bring safety and stability, which comes when you play together regularly. What it means for the club is that they won't leave anything behind. That's clear from Bayern's history.

"When defeat happens, they question everything: the position, the players, the whole philosophy of the club and often they come back even stronger after a crisis."

However, Bayern midfielder Joshua Kimmich lamented his team's performance: "It was frustrating, completely inexplicable. Regardless of the situation on the board, this shouldn't be happening."
