This is not the first time BTS's military service has been controversial.
News1 reported on April 12, on the program of MBC, Seong Il Jong, a member of the National Assembly's National Defense Committee and Chairman of the People's Power Policy Committee said that BTS has brought about the national interest for about approx. 56 trillion won.
Representative Seong Il Jong also explained, "Winning an Olympic gold medal has an economic boost of about 259 billion won. Meanwhile, winning first place on Billboard has an economic boost of 600 billion won. one second. BTS has been at the top for 17 weeks so far, and the group is bringing in about 56 trillion won (about $45.5 billion) in the national interest."
According to News1, congressman Seong Il Jong has a positive opinion about BTS being exempt from military service. With the benefits BTS brings, the congressman thinks that it is appropriate for BTS to enjoy an exception in the matter of military service. Over the past time, whether BTS should be exempt from military service thanks to their achievements in the international market is constantly controversial.
BTS's special military service story has once again become the subject of controversy, after President Yoon Seok Yeol's inauguration ceremony. On April 11, Mr. Shin Yong Hyun - spokesman of the Presidential Inauguration Preparation Committee - said, "At the meeting on April 12, the National Assembly will discuss BTS (schools) special circumstances of military service) as this involves an amendment to the law".
Currently, an amendment bill to the "Military Service Act" is being passed by the National Assembly, allowing popular artists of great achievements to be transferred to art and sports staff.
Representative Seong Il-jong - a member of the National Assembly Committee of Korea said that there are inadequacies when the Grammy, Billboard ... system is not included in the list of 42 competitions exempt from military service.
BTS's management company also called on the Government and the National Assembly to come to a conclusion soon. HYBE's communications director, CCO Jinhyeong Lee said, "Artists have repeatedly said that they will respond to the nation's call.
I hope the military service law will be passed in Korea. The uncertainty is causing difficulties, so I hope that the military service law will be clearly discussed as soon as possible."
This is not the first time BTS's military service has been controversial. In November 2021, the National Assembly Defense Committee discussed amendments to the "Military Service Act" but were not passed.
However, at that time, it was not possible to make a decision, because the majority of members of the Bill Subcommittee (National Defense Committee) said that a more in-depth discussion was needed. The issue of military service is very sensitive, especially in relation to popular culture artists, and needs to be scrutinized.
Currently, BTS, HYBE Group and the Korean public themselves also express their interest in amending the "Military Service Act". Accordingly, the oldest member of BTS, Jin, has turned 30 and must enlist at the end of this year according to the current military service law.
Regarding the fact that HYBE called on the National Assembly to make a decision on BTS's military service, Korean public opinion expressed anger and opposition to the company's move. Korean netizens believe that enlisting is a civic duty, while those who are more difficult temporarily put aside their work to fulfill their national service, BTS members still delay this.
In particular, the statement of CCO Jinhyeong Lee also became the subject of criticism. One commenter on Twitter: "Enlisting is an obligation, and I understand there are some cases where it is exempt. I also sent my son into the army to protect the country, he has to watch all night. , only get to rest for about 2 hours. The whole country is watching, so pay attention to your words."
"Exempting from military service just because of popularity, it's like a farce. Hopefully, this time, we will reduce the number of special cases that existed before," an angry resident.
Another comment: "Why is it difficult for BTS? Any Korean man has an obligation to serve the country. Shouldn't he know that enlisting in the army is obvious? Or becoming a singer because he wants to be in the military? Why are they tired of having to go or not, when they already knew they would have to enlist in the first place?"
