Shocking Discovery: "Jungle Man" Returns to the Community

The existence of the Ruc people was first known in late 1959, when soldiers of the Ca Xeng Border Guard (Thuong Hoa, Minh Hoa, Quang Binh) while on patrol accidentally discovered a group of "forest people" moving as quickly as wild animals, naked, living in deep caves.

After many months of persistent approach and campaigning, this timid group of people finally left the cave, accepting a settled life in the Ruc Lan valley, Thuong Hoa commune. The name Ruc – in the local dialect, meaning “a cave with running water” – was given to them. From then on, the Ruc ethnic group was officially recognized, joining the community of Vietnamese ethnic groups.

Notably, despite living in integration, by early 2013, the Ruc people were still internationally listed as one of the 10 most mysterious tribes in the world. Scientists identified them as belonging to the Chut ethnic group (along with the Sach, May, Ma Lieng, A Rem...) based on anthropological and linguistic research.

Imprints of "Ancient Vietnamese" and Primitive Lifestyle

According to cultural researcher Dinh Thanh Du – who has spent most of his life studying them – the Ruc people originally had no family name, no clan name, and bore strong features of the ancient Vietnamese. Before leaving the cave, this community had only 109 people, living completely isolated, hunting, gathering, and digging for taro and yam as their only source of income.

Their lives are closely linked to the mountains and forests: climbing trees, moving quickly on the mountain slopes, not wearing clothes, but covering their bodies with sui tree bark. In particular, the Ruc people have the custom of sleeping sitting in caves when night falls.

Surprisingly, even after more than 50 years of having houses, many Ruc people still keep their old habits. The couple Cao Chon and Cao Thi Bim (over 80 years old) still often move into caves to live. Mr. Cao Van Dan (39 years old), Head of Mo O O O village, said that nearly 500 Ruc people today still occasionally "remember the caves", many families still live in caves for a few months during the farming season.

Creepy Magic: Constriction and Steam

What makes the Ruc people most mysterious is the existence of two unique forms of magic that Mr. Dinh Thanh Du asserts that other ethnic groups do not have: Blowing and Opening, and Steaming.

Constriction and Opening (Birth Control): Constriction: Using a spell to blow on a woman to prevent childbirth. Opening: Using a spell to help a woman conceive when needed.

Steaming Technique (Avoiding Wild Animals): When entering the forest, the Ruc people only need to recite a spell, then tigers, leopards, and wild elephants will not dare to come near to attack. In fact, there has never been a record of any Ruc people being harmed by wild animals even though they live in the deep forest. Mr. Du also recounted the incident where Dr. Vo Xuan Trang almost lost his life when he intentionally tested the power of the steaming technique by following behind the village elder who had recited the spell, and had to ask the village elder to come back and break the spell before he could return to normal.

The contents of the spells are still taboo and sacred, absolutely not revealed to outsiders. This makes the Ruc people still keep it completely mysterious and is a great challenge for any scientist who wants to explore.
