A giant waterspout appeared in the sea off the coast of Mallorca, leaving locals and tourists stunned.
The phenomenon occurred on the morning of November 21, near the village of Deià on the island of Mallorca, Spain.
The clip shows a column of vortex soaring from the sea to the sky, moving strongly and creating an extremely violent feeling. A gardener named Martin, who happened to witness it, shared that he has lived in this area for 20 years and has seen several small tornadoes, but this time "was the biggest one" he has ever seen. The appearance of this scene has made many people confused, especially when it formed right next to the coast - an area that is often crowded with tourists.
According to meteorologists, the above phenomenon is a waterspout, also known as a whirlpool, when it forms at sea. It is created when a mass of hot, humid air rises rapidly and meets a layer of colder air above, forming a vertical vortex. Waterspouts can suck up water vapor or even pull up seawater, creating a dense vortex that grows larger over time. In many cases, the wind force inside the waterspout is very strong, enough to endanger ships or sweep up objects on the water surface.
The phenomenon occurred at a time when the weather in Mallorca became unusual. The island had just experienced the first cold spell of the season with snow and hail - a rarity in the Mediterranean region. Strong winds of nearly 90 km/h made the air even more severe. The sudden change between air masses is believed to have led to the formation of this whirlpool. Residents said they had not seen such a large and close-to-shore waterspout in many years, forcing those present at the beach at the time to move immediately for fear of a bad situation that could occur.
In Vietnam, many notable waterspouts have been recorded in the past, mainly in the summer or at the time of the changing seasons when cold air begins to penetrate. In 2021, at Nha Trang beach, people recorded the image of a waterspout hundreds of meters high, lasting for several minutes, creating a majestic scene but also making many people worried. Also in that year, in Binh Dai district (Ben Tre province), a waterspout caused great damage when it collapsed 142 houses, injured 8 people and caused a mass power outage in the area. These incidents show that although waterspouts often appear for a very short time, their destructive power cannot be underestimated, especially in densely populated or coastal areas.
Meteorological experts emphasize that early recognition of signs of a tornado formation is important in ensuring safety. Before it occurs, the sky often darkens very quickly, clouds form a funnel shape, accompanied by unusually strong wind howling. When noticing these signs, people need to quickly find a safe shelter, prioritizing solid structures or the ground floor of a concrete house. If you are outdoors, finding low ground, staying away from large trees or electric poles will significantly reduce the danger. In any case, do not stand near windows or glass doors because the wind can cause them to shatter. In addition, do not run in the direction of the tornado's movement because its speed and trajectory are difficult to predict.
The appearance of a giant waterspout in Mallorca is a reminder of the unpredictable power of nature, especially in the context of the increasing number of extreme weather events around the world. Understanding the nature of the phenomenon, being alert to unusual signs and following safety instructions are always the best ways to minimize risks and protect the community.
