The tragic bus accident in Lao Cai, which claimed the lives of nine people, is still shrouded in grief. A young woman born in 2003, who narrowly escaped death by getting off the bus to rest midway, tearfully revealed chilling details leading up to the tragedy.
A fateful fever and a decision to turn the tide against death.
Sharing her story with reporters while still in shock, L. said this was her second time participating in a journey to bring warmth to children in mountainous areas. Before departing from Hanoi, she felt tired, dizzy, and had a slight fever. However, due to her dedication to the trip, L. endured the pain and joined the group. As the bus started moving, her fever worsened, causing her to fall into a deep sleep amidst the quiet solitude of her teammates who were asleep.
Around 6 a.m. on December 27th, the group stopped for breakfast at a rice roll restaurant on the road connecting National Highway 32 with Provincial Highway 174. At this point, L.'s health had reached a point of exhaustion; she couldn't swallow any food and was constantly nauseous. Sensing that her poor health would affect the group's progress, L. made a fateful decision: She asked everyone's permission to stay at the restaurant to rest, and they would return to Hanoi together. No one could have imagined that this would be the last time L. would see her brothers and sisters in person.
Panic-stricken cries and a scene littered with blood and tears.
Around 8 a.m., while lying listlessly on a small bed at the eatery, L. was startled awake by the frantic cries of the owner. The terrible news struck like a knife: the car that had left less than two hours earlier had been involved in a horrific accident right in front of her. Shocked and disbelieving, L. quickly asked a local resident to take her by motorbike to the scene, 5 kilometers away. Before her eyes was a scene of utter devastation: the 29-seater passenger bus was crushed, its windows shattered, and belongings and charitable donations scattered everywhere on the steep slope.
L. choked back tears as she recalled the moment she had to face the cruel reality while assisting authorities in identifying each of her fellow passengers. Just hours before, they had been laughing, talking, and encouraging her to take care of herself, but now all that remained were cold bodies. The horrific accident at Km35 claimed the lives of nine people, including the driver, Do Dang Thinh (65 years old). The brake system failed while descending a long, winding slope, turning the vehicle into a "death machine" that sped freely before overturning, leaving an irreplaceable pain for the victims' families.
The obsession with "those left behind" and the value of life.
Returning to Hanoi on the morning of December 28th after completing all necessary procedures, L. said she couldn't sleep a wink during the entire journey. The images of her kind-hearted friends, who passed away with their charitable plans unfinished, haunted her mind. The past two days have been the longest and most painful for L., as the line between life and death was as thin as a decision to stop at a roadside rice roll stall.
Having miraculously survived the tragedy, L. feels more appreciative of the present moment than ever before. She understands that she has just received a "ticket" back from the clutches of death, allowing her to reunite with her parents and express her love to those around her. Currently, nine injured victims are still receiving intensive treatment at Viet Duc Hospital and Bach Mai Hospital. The accident serves as a devastating reminder of the importance of safety on mountain roads, where kind hearts sometimes face the most cruel fates.
