Born into a family with a scientific tradition, Viet Khue used to be the valedictorian of the country with an almost absolute transcript. But instead of pursuing a career in research, he chose television â where he became one of the most beloved Olympia MCs.
Academic family background: Childhood letters and math problems make the international mathematical world "wince"
Born in 1983 in Hanoi, Nguyen Huu Viet Khue is the son of Professor Nguyen Huu Viet Hung â a famous mathematician, who was awarded the title of People's Teacher and was one of the first two individuals to receive the Ta Quang Buu Award. In a family environment that values knowledge, Viet Khue soon showed his talent for mathematics from a young age.
A special memory was recounted by his father: in 1994, while working at the CRM Mathematics Institute in Spain, he received a letter from his 10-year-old son â Viet Khue â expressing his heartwarming because he had failed the exam for a good student in Math. In the letter, the boy sent a difficult math problem to ask his father for help. After translating the question into English, Prof. Viet Hung shared it with international colleagues. Their reaction was surprised: "Why ask a 10-year-old a math problem like that?"
The question is: "For a number with 55 digits, start and end with the digit 5. If the digit 5 at the beginning to the end of the given number is transferred, a number 5 times smaller than the given number is obtained. Find that number." The story not only shows Viet Khue's mathematical qualities, but also reflects the strict and inspiring educational environment from his family.
Academic achievements: Almost absolute transcripts and the title of "Valedictorian of the Valedictorians"
Inheriting her qualities from her father, Viet Khue attended a math class at Hanoi â Amsterdam High School. In 2002, he won the third prize in the National Excellent Student Exam in Mathematics â that year's exam did not have the first prize because the question was too difficult. With this achievement, he was directly recruited to university and exempted from the graduation exam.
At the University of Natural Sciences â Hanoi National University, Viet Khue studied for a Bachelor of Science in Talent. In 2006, he graduated with a GPA of 9.45 â becoming the valedictorian of valedictorians in Hanoi. The transcript he shared again in 2024 made the online community admire: nearly 95% are 9 and 10 points, especially in advanced Mathematics subjects such as Functional Calculus, Differential Figures, Proper Derivative Equations, Stochastic Processes, Approximation Theory.
He once shared: "There is no success that comes naturally, all of them have to be trained hard to succeed." At one point, he studied for 10-12 hours a day, and when he took the exam, it increased to 14-16 hours, with no days off.
Career Turning Point: From Football Fan to National Commentator
Although he once intended to follow his father's career, Viet Khue turned to television. In 2006, while working on his graduation thesis, he happened to read an announcement recruiting fans to participate in World Cup commentary. With a love for football since the age of 12, he signed up to participate with a trying mentality. Unexpectedly, his natural and intellectual expression made a strong impression, helping him become one of the few audience members invited to comment directly with experts.
That fate connected him with journalist Phan Ngoc Tien â Head of VTV's Sports Department â and opened a journey of nearly 20 years with television. He once shared: "I didn't expect it to be a fateful turn, taking me from the path of research to the profession of holding a mic."
Impression at VTV: From sports news to Olympia playground
Joining VTV, Viet Khue quickly made her mark as a sports editor. He leads many programs such as 360 Degree Sports, 24/7 Sports, 360 Degree Pulse Sports, and is a familiar commentator in major tournaments such as the English Premier League, Euro, World Cup, AFF Cup.
In particular, from the 8th to the 13th season of Road to Olympia, Viet Khue took on the role of MC. With his intellectual demeanor and way of leading both scientifically and inspiringly, he became one of the most beloved hosts of the show. Particularly in the 9th season, he switched to the main host, showing flexibility in the television profession.
Inspiring Academics: When the Love of Math Returns to the Blackboard
Although not pursuing a career in research, Viet Khue still nurtures a passion for Mathematics. From 2024, he will open a Math class for middle school students, both online and offline. The classes are well-organized, limiting the number to ensure quality. He chose to teach grades 6, 7 and 8 â a period when students are prone to knowledge gaps â with the desire to "sow the seeds of love for Math for the younger generation".
He once shared: "I regret if I can't pass on that useful knowledge to students. Math has always been a very important subject."
Logical thinking and everyday personality: When Math learners know how to "soften" life
Math learners are often labeled dry, but Viet Khue said he has learned to be more flexible over time. "It's true that it's both dry and hard, especially when you first graduated. But when I understand life better, I know when to be soft," he joked.
The strictness from his father is also a factor that shapes his personality. After winning the National Award, he once asked for a break but was rejected. Instead, his father gave him a book called "Linear Algebra" written by himself to continue his studies. "At that time, I felt constrained, but later I understood that it was necessary strictness," Viet Khue shared.
Personal life: An intellectual home and a modern educational perspective
Viet Khue has a happy home with his wife in the same profession. His two twins are in grade 4 this year, and both husband and wife are closely monitoring their children's studies, especially Math. Although they do not impose it, they set specific goals for their children to strive for. He once shared: "We let the children develop naturally. Parents will only suggest, give advice, the decision is up to you."
His wife is described by him as a "solid defender" â intelligent, vivacious, agile and always accompanying in work and life. "Our time is entirely spent on work and family. Since I started teaching, the whole family has gone out less, but that's how I appreciate the value of time," he said.
