Recently, artist Van Dung unexpectedly released six self-composed poems revolving around the Tet Comedy Show, also known as the Year-End Meeting, immediately causing a stir and much discussion on social media.
Specifically, with her witty rhyming style, characteristic of the "Tao" (Vietnamese New Year's Eve comedy show), the verses by artist Van Dung are not only playful but also evoke nostalgia for a program that has become an iconic symbol of every New Year's Eve for Vietnamese audiences.
On her personal page, artist Van Dung wrote: "Suppose there were no Táo Quân (Kitchen Gods). The smiles would be missing, making it so sad. Reporting, teasing, praising and criticizing. All the Kitchen Gods are passionate and enthusiastic. Riding carp to Heaven. Turn on the music and we're ready to party!"
Those witty verses quickly spread on social media. However, behind the laughter lay the anxiety of many viewers about the possibility that the Táo Quân (Year-End Meeting) show might not air on New Year's Eve of the Year of the Horse 2026. Many felt that even just the line "what if there's no Táo Quân" was enough to make them feel like the Lunar New Year was missing a familiar part of their lives.
In the comments section, numerous viewers expressed their feelings and hopes for the program to continue: "Without Táo Quân, Tet would be less joyful, dear Táo Quân cast! Wishing the Táo Quân cast always good health and peace so that they can bring more laughter to life and condemn many wrongdoings in society!", "We know you're getting old and tired, but we grew up with your companionship. It would be so sad if Táo Quân stopped performing."
Many also believe that Táo Quân is not simply a television program, but is also associated with family memories and childhood: "I still remember watching Táo Quân with my dad every New Year's Eve. Laughter echoed throughout the house. New Year's Eve wouldn't be considered Tet without Táo Quân," "A year of hard work to meet Mr. Hoàng today. Without Táo Quân, that year's Tet wouldn't be complete."
Besides words of encouragement, many viewers also mentioned veteran artists who have been associated with the program, such as Van Dung, Quang Thang, Tu Long, Chi Trung, Xuan Bac... and especially People's Artist Cong Ly. Many expressed their wish for the artist's speedy recovery so that viewers can once again witness the familiar cast reuniting on the Tao Quan stage.
Previously, Van Dung herself had also touched the hearts of viewers when she posted a few verses with a farewell tone: "Perhaps I should send my regards. Bye bye, goodbye, then go to the back. Let the young 'Táo' (characters representing deities) come up to pay their respects. Bearing the responsibility: I respectfully report to Emperor Hoang."
Representatives from the Culture and Entertainment Department of Vietnam Television (VTV) stated that, due to the later-than-usual Lunar New Year (Year of the Horse), the team is developing several options to present to the leadership. It's highly likely that this year's traditional "Tao Quan" (Kitchen Gods) show will be canceled, replaced by a new version or a similar program. However, no official decisions have been made yet; everything requires careful and thorough consideration.
In fact, Táo Quân has gone through many ups and downs. From 2003 to 2019, the program was broadcast regularly, becoming a "specialty" of New Year's Eve with its sharp satire on social issues. In 2020, the program unexpectedly paused, making way for the program "Làng Vũ Đại thời hội nhập" (Vũ Đại Village in the Era of Integration). This was considered a lighter version of Táo Quân. In subsequent years, Táo Quân returned with many changes in content and cast before officially returning to the audience.
