Tran Hung Huy - The general "born at the finish line", became the youngest president in the banking world

ACB Chairman Tran Hung Huy has revived the bank from crisis into a multi-billion dollar empire. He has become a sensation with his image as a multi-talented "CEO," singing and dancing in the rain, breaking stereotypes in the financial industry. For Tet 2026, he chose to slow down and do many special things.
Coming from a distinguished family and having an extensive educational background in the United States.
Mr. Tran Hung Huy comes from a genuine family of entrepreneurs, with his father, Mr. Tran Mong Hung, having laid the foundation for the ACB empire. However, instead of relying on his family's influence, this young man, born in the year of the Horse, chose to assert himself by cultivating his knowledge in leading educational environments around the world. Early on, he studied in the United States and graduated with a Master of Business Administration from Chapman University in 2002. Not stopping there, driven by a desire to delve deeper into the dynamics of the economy, he continued his academic journey and successfully defended his PhD in Economics at Golden Gate University in 2011.
Earning a PhD at the age of 33 is not only proof of sharp intellect but also a thorough preparation in terms of systems thinking before entering the major battles in the financial market. With a solid knowledge base from the West, Mr. Huy brought a breath of fresh air, a scientific yet flexible approach to the market, which later helped ACB make a spectacular comeback.
The youngest chairman in history and the rescue of ACB from the eye of the storm.
The fateful turning point in Tran Hung Huy's career occurred in 2012. It was the darkest period for ACB after the scandal involving Nguyen Duc Kien (Chairman Kien) and the prosecution of numerous high-ranking officials. Amidst the turbulent times at ACB and the wavering trust of its customers, 34-year-old Tran Hung Huy was chosen to assume the position of Chairman of the Board. At the time, public opinion was skeptical, even somewhat apprehensive, about such a young man shouldering such a heavy responsibility in such a difficult context.
However, reality proved that "fire tests gold, hardship tests strength." With calmness and the right strategy, Mr. Huy quickly stabilized the organization, regaining the trust of shareholders and partners. Just one year after taking over, in 2013, ACB began to show strong signs of revival with after-tax profits continuously growing quarter after quarter. By 2014, Fitch Ratings upgraded ACB's credit outlook from "negative" to "stable" – an international recognition of the young chairman's reconstruction efforts. The peak was in 2018, when the bank's profit reached nearly VND 6,400 billion, 2.4 times higher than the previous year, while keeping non-performing loans at a record low of 0.69%.
The visual revolution and performances that took social media by storm.
If it were just about dry financial figures, Tran Hung Huy would probably be just like any other chairman. However, he has created a new definition of "bank leadership" by daring to live true to his passion and personality. In June 2023, at the 30th anniversary celebration of ACB, this chairman caused a sensation on Vietnamese social media with his mashup performance of "Always Remember Us This Way" and "Lonely on the Sofa." The image of the head of a multi-billion dollar bank, wearing a white shirt and trousers, confidently playing the piano and dancing energetically under artificial rain on stage, created a media earthquake.
This performance wasn't just for entertainment; it was part of the image revolution that Mr. Huy was pursuing. He wanted to bridge the gap between leaders and employees, between the bank and its Gen Z customers. Publicly sharing his social media accounts, regularly showcasing his workouts and stylish "CEO" lifestyle, helped him become a true KOL (Key Opinion Leader). Thanks to this approachable nature, ACB's return on equity (ROE) consistently ranks among the top performers in the system, demonstrating the effectiveness of building a personal brand in conjunction with business performance.
Trillion-dollar achievements and telling figures in 2025
In 2025, under the leadership of Chairman Tran Hung Huy, ACB's assets surpassed 1 trillion VND, an increase of 19%. Although after-tax profit reached 15,625 billion VND (slightly decreased due to increased provisions), the bank's financial health remained stable with capital mobilization of 718,000 billion VND. The issuance of 506 million shares helped the charter capital exceed 38,840 billion VND, increasing Mr. Huy's personal assets by 500 billion VND. Furthermore, he impressed by maintaining an average employee income of 38 million VND per month, affirming the bank's position as having an ideal working environment.
Mindset for the Year of the Horse: "Slow down to go further" during the Lunar New Year of the Horse.
As the Lunar New Year of the Horse 2026 approaches, for Mr. Tran Hung Huy, it's not just a holiday but also a special milestone in his "birth year." In contrast to his glamorous stage persona, this chairman's Tet (Lunar New Year) is deeply traditional and tranquil. He believes that Tet is a time for family, a time to set aside the numbers and spend time with loved ones cleaning the house, visiting relatives, and gathering around a warm New Year's meal. His dedication to making traditional cakes and caring for his family during these days is his way of balancing life after the suffocating pressures of the business world.
Sharing his perspective on the "year of change," Mr. Huy expressed no anxiety, viewing it as an opportunity to reflect on his more than a decade-long journey leading ACB. He believes that in a world where the cycle of change is only 2-3 years, leaders cannot afford to stop. "This year, I will dedicate more time to acquiring knowledge and participating in new courses," he stated. His motto for life and work in the new year is to proactively update technology and continuously learn to avoid falling behind. For Tran Hung Huy, each passing year is an opportunity to better prepare his thinking and knowledge, in order to make crucial long-term decisions for the organization. The image of this youthful, multi-talented, yet profoundly insightful chairman will undoubtedly continue to inspire many young generations of Vietnamese people in the future.
