Carpenter Bui Trong Quan: The person who caused a storm with a carved wooden painting for Xuan Son

Carpenter Bui Trong Quan (Quoc Oai district, Hanoi) has a strong passion for football. Watching every step of the Vietnamese team at the 2024 ASEAN Cup, Mr. Quan was impressed with naturalized striker Nguyen Xuan Son.

After the final of the first leg between Vietnam and Thailand ended, Mr. Quan joined the line of fans waiting to meet player Xuan Son. At more than 11 p.m. on January 2, after the press conference ended, he also fulfilled his desire to meet his idol at close range and was personally presented to the male player with a woodcut painting.

"Until now, I have not lost my excitement and excitement when witnessing Xuan Son's two goals, winning for Vietnam in the final match of the first leg against the Thai team.

Although I couldn't personally give this gift to Xuan Son and take a commemorative photo, the image of him enjoying taking pictures with the picture on the car made me very happy and excited," Mr. Quan shared.

During the 2024 ASEAN Cup season, every match with Vietnam, the brothers in the workshop are also facilitated to watch football together, even though there are quite a lot of year-end orders.

Regarding the special picture, Mr. Quan said that the idea came from a celebratory photo of the Brazilian-born male player in the win over the Singapore team. Impressed by Xuan Son's image both in the yard and outside the field, the brothers at the workshop discussed making a woodcut portrait to recreate that moment of victory.

The painting was carved from a piece of red wood, made in 1 week and completed just before the match between Vietnam and Thailand took place on January 2.

The brothers in the workshop are used to carving traditional dragon and phoenix patterns, but this is the first time I have made a wood-carved portrait painting. The difficult thing is how to exude Xuan Son's charisma. The brothers had to admire and study carefully before shaping. Especially for specifications such as eyes and corners of the mouth," Mr. Quan confided.

The painting is sculpted on a wooden workpiece with red rubber cartilage - a location of good wood quality on a wooden tree, 55cm in diameter, 6cm thick.

Anh Quan and 3 colleagues in the workshop worked continuously for a week, working continuously day and night to finish before the final of the first leg of Vietnam against Thailand.

The process of wood sculpture usually consists of 10 steps, but in Xuan Son's work celebrating victory, the craftsman has distilled the stages, focusing on the main steps such as: lowering the wooden foundation, chiseling, chiseling, trimming, making the foundation and finishing. The painting is coated with PU paint for better preservation.

Through the painting, Mr. Quan wishes to convey his love for football with his carpentry profession. This is also a way to pay tribute to Nguyen Xuan Son's dedication to Vietnamese football.

In a sharing about the great interest from Vietnamese football fans, Xuan Son said: "I love it and am very happy to live in this culture. I, and my family, feel at home. Vietnam has given me everything. I will give full play to my ability, contribute to helping the Vietnamese team play better and win the championship cup."

Mr. Bui Trong Quan is currently the owner of Bui Gia wood workshop in Ngoc Than craft village, is an artisan, whenever he mentions it, he is always proud when talking about the potential of traditional wood carving: "Wood carving has never disappeared, because in Vietnamese culture, wood products always have their own attraction thanks to their durability and timeless beauty".

According to Mr. Quan, as life is developing, consumers not only demand quality but also require sophisticated and unique designs. This means that the skills and creativity of workers must also be constantly improved to meet new trends, keeping the profession always developing.

Mr. Quan confided that every year his wood factory welcomes a young person with difficult circumstances, to provide vocational training completely free of charge, supporting both accommodation and allowances. For him, this is not only an act of help, but also a way to preserve and pass on the essence of the profession to the next generation. "In the midst of the carving profession is gradually disappearing, it is very difficult to find people who really love the profession and can create beautiful chisels. As long as anyone has a good heart to learn, I am always ready to pass on the profession," he confided.
