After a stroke that seriously deteriorated his health, comedian Tan Beo continued to face stage 5 kidney failure. Thanks to persistent treatment and changes in lifestyle habits, he gradually recovered, escaping the risk of dialysis.
In mid-2023, comedian Tan Beo made colleagues and the audience worried when he suddenly suffered a cerebrovascular accident and had to be hospitalized in an emergency room. Although he saved his life, he still suffered from many severe sequelae: difficulty speaking, difficulty walking and having to be confined to a wheelchair for a long time. Not only that, the doctor also diagnosed him with stage 5 kidney failure, forcing him to undergo periodic dialysis to maintain his life.
In March 2025, artist Tan Beo continued to be re-examined at a hospital in Ho Chi Minh City. HCM. He shared that the cause of his health deterioration was largely due to an uncontrolled diet for many years. "I like to eat salty, love salted food, fish sauce, eggs and often drink beer late at night. Now I see that habit is a big mistake," the male artist said.
According to the doctor, who directly treated Tan Beo, the patient had many complicated underlying diseases such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes, high blood lipids, ischemic heart and sequelae of brain accidents. These pathologies not only cause independent damage but also "coordinate" to rapidly deteriorate kidney function.
At the time of the test, the artist's glomerular filtration rate was at 22mL/min/1.73m². However, because he was still able to excrete urine, the doctor did not prescribe dialysis, but instead a renal conservation treatment regimen to delay dialysis for as long as possible.
In the early stages of treatment, due to a misunderstanding of the diet for people with kidney failure, Tan Beo used to completely abstain from protein, vegetables and fruits, causing the body to be exhausted and severe muscle atrophy. After being instructed by his doctor, he began to eat more scientifically: reduce salt, limit fried foods, fish sauce, red meat and offal; at the same time, drink enough water and supplement with keto protein or amino acids to balance nutrition.
At the same time, the doctor prescribed antihypertensive drugs below 140/90mmHg, controlling blood sugar and blood fat at a stable level. "It is important for patients to strictly follow the protocol and have regular follow-up visits every month to comment on progress," Dr. Hang said.
After three months of active treatment, Tan Beo's glomerular filtration index improved significantly â from 24mL/min/1.73m² (stage 5) to 31mL/min/1.73m² (stage 3B). As a result, he temporarily got rid of the risk of having to undergo hemodialysis, just maintain regular check-ups.
At the end of October, when he was re-examined, artist Tan Beo was able to speak more fluently and in high spirits. He revealed that he is planning to return to the stage in the near future, although he still has to comply with a strict treatment regimen.
According to statistics from the health sector, Vietnam currently has more than 8.7 million people with chronic kidney disease, accounting for 12.8% of the adult population â one of the highest rates in the Asia-Pacific region. Among them, about 800,000 people need periodic dialysis every year, but the country only has more than 5,000 dialysis machines. meeting less than 1/3 of the actual demand.
Experts warn that kidney failure is a disease that progresses silently and is very difficult to recover if detected late. For prevention, each person needs to maintain a healthy lifestyle: drink enough water, eat in moderation, limit salt and alcohol; do not smoke, exercise regularly, and control blood pressure and blood sugar periodically.
