Recently, Miss à Nhi and more than 100 contestants took turns in the presentation round about charity projects. In this round, the representatives will take turns presenting about the projects they have been and are serving the community, and the girls' contributions to their hometown.
According to Sash Factor , Somalia's representative - Zainab Jama - moved the audience when she revealed that she had been a victi.m of female genital mutilation (FMG) since childhood, having to go through physical and mental pai.n while living with the practice. According to the Guardian , FMG is a tradition that has been in place for over 400 years in Somalia, and most women in this country undergo this procedure.
Zainab Jama said: "It happened when I was seven years old and I was playing outside with my friends. I was taken away, my clothes were torn off and I was taken to a room where three women were waiting with razor blades, scissors and some old tools. They were not doctors and had no medical training. It was just a tradition that had been passed down for generations."
The beauty said she screamed in pai.n because she was not given anesthesia or painkillers during the process. "I remember crying and begging on my knees, but a woman told me to be quiet, to be brave and proud because this is part of our tradition," she continued.
According to Jama , her ski.n was only sewn with thick thread or hemp after completion, then left in a dark room with her legs tied together for several days. The contestant could not contain her emotions when she told this story, stopping her presentation for a few minutes. The chairwoman of Miss World - Ms. Julia Morley - came to hug and encourage her.
She continued to talk about the days she lived in a dark room, witnessing herself bleedin.g every day. "There, I had no toys, nothing, just charcoal next to me. I used them to draw on the wall, to draw dreams to try to survive because after going through that process, many girls died, unable to live on.
That moment changed my life forever and my childhood ended. While I was alive, many other girls were not so lucky," said Zainab Jama .
In her speech, Zainab Jama said that about 98% (more than 4 million girls) of Somali women undergo this practice, while the remaining 2% are underage girls. Jama's story and the story of all the women in her homeland became the motivation for her to establish the Female Initiative Foundation - a foundation to empower women, fight FMG and protect the future of girls.
"Through the organization, I help people raise awareness. I will go out into the community, speak in public. I will teach mothers to understand that tradition cannot be exchanged for the body and soul of their children. We can still honor tradition without harming our little girls," she said at the end of her presentation. After finishing, Mrs. Julia Morley thanked Zainab Jama for her courage.
The Sash Factor website commented that Zainab Jama is not only a contestant in a beauty pageant but also a voice for millions of girls whose childhoods and rights have been stolen by outdated customs. "Her decision to speak out on an international stage marks a strong step forward in her fight for human rights, especially for girls and women around the world," quoted from the Sash Factor article.
Zainab Jama , 23, graduated in aviation and airport management. She said she followed her family to the UK when she was young and inherited the education here. According to Pageant Circle , she is passionate about cultural exchange and global opportunities. In addition, she loves football, modeling and poetry. In 2023, she tried her hand at the Miss Global contest in Vietnam, stopping in the top 13.
Miss World is one of the two most prestigious beauty pageants in the world, along with Miss Universe , first held in England in 1951. The 72nd edition will take place from May 7-31 in India with many activities such as cultural experiences and sub-competitions. The reigning Miss Krystyna Pyszková, from the Czech Republic , will crown her successor at the final.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO) , FMG (Female genital mutilation) does not provide health benefits to women, potentially causing problems with urination, menstruatio.n, and bacterial infections. At the same time, it can cause complications during childbirth, increasing the risk of deat.h in newborns. Experts estimate that more than 230 million children and women have undergone this procedure in 30 countries in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. This practice is still widely circulated, despite efforts to eradicat.e it by policymakers and scientists.
