Amidst the controversy surrounding Minh Tú's statements in a podcast hosted by Miss Lương Thùy Linh, director Hoàng Nhật Nam – considered close to and behind many programs featuring Minh Tú – recently spoke out in defense of the model, asserting that she does not fit the conventional image of a "friendly beauty queen."
The controversy stemmed from a recent podcast episode in the series "How's This Year Going?", where Minh Tú appeared as a guest. During her conversation with Lương Thùy Linh, Minh Tú frankly stated that she and the 2000-born beauty queen were "not very close," "just acquaintances," and didn't work together or hang out much. This statement immediately made the recording awkward and sparked a heated debate on social media about the model's choice of words.
As soon as the clip went viral, many viewers commented that Minh Tú was too blunt, lacking subtlety and tact in a sensitive communication situation like a talk show. Some argued that her way of speaking could easily lead to misunderstandings or put others in an awkward position, especially when she was a guest.
Following the mixed reactions, Minh Tú proactively issued an apology. On social media, she wrote that her words had "caused a stir in the neighborhood," expressed gratitude to those who were understanding and supportive, and admitted that she would "self-reflect" on her way of expressing herself.
Amidst the controversy, director Hoang Nhat Nam posted his personal opinion in defense of Minh Tu. He emphasized that the model has never fit the image of a "friendly beauty queen" according to the soft, graceful criteria that the public often expects. On the contrary, Minh Tu is known for her edgy, straightforward, and sometimes fierce personality – which, according to him, has become her unique appeal, leading to frequent appearances in many reality shows because it creates drama and attracts audience attention.
The director also clarified that while viewers might initially perceive her as strict, even "aggressive," when facing challenges, they will realize she has charm and an interesting, straightforward style, which producers desire because it creates viral buzz and discussion. According to him, that's why Minh Tú continues to be trusted and invited to participate in many projects.
In his post, Hoang Nhat Nam also affirmed that in real life, Minh Tu is a kind and compassionate person with a high sense of responsibility. He recounted that she is willing to support the crew when needed, even without receiving payment, and refused gifts when she was sick. He believes that the difference between her tough image on screen and her real-life personality is the reason why viewers easily misunderstand her.
He also described that beneath her "tough and aggressive" exterior, Minh Tú has a "warm, kind, and lovely heart," making those he mentors—including beauty queens—thankful of her. According to him, many producers sometimes "owe this debt of gratitude for a lifetime" if they cannot pay her fees.
Responding to Minh Tú's apology under the director's post, Hoàng Nhật Nam jokingly said that the recent controversy "was just part of creating viral buzz" and expressed his closeness, showing that the relationship between the two remains very open.
This incident continues to attract the attention of the public interested in beauty and entertainment, because although it was just a phrase in a conversation, the blunt way it was expressed has raised a larger issue about how artists behave on television and in today's media environment.
Minh Tú (born in 1991 in Ho Chi Minh City) won the silver medal at the Vietnam Supermodel 2013 competition. In 2017, she was the runner-up in Asia's Next Top Model, became a coach on The Face Vietnam, and a judge on The Look Vietnam.
In 2018, she won the Miss Supranational Asia title. In 2020, she became a coach on Asia's Next Top Model. She also ventured into acting in films such as Miss Gangster (2019), The Godfather (2021), and The Lover (2022).
