On December 9, an article titled "BlackPink star Rosé's new single disappoints, but big things could be coming" was published by the US magazine Forbes.
The article is referring to Number One Gir.l, a pre-release single by Rosé, which she released after her hugely successful hit APT and before the release of her solo album rosie.
Specifically, Forbes described the single as "disappointing" and added that it "didn't even chart on any of the three charts that help a tune enter the Ho.t 100", namely Billboard's Digital Song Sales, Streaming Songs, and Radio Play charts.
"That's surprising, because almost every song released by members of some popular K-Pop groups usually sells well enough to earn the top spot on that list," the media outlet also said.
Forbesâ comments sparked a heated debate online, with many fans expressing their anger and defending the idol. Specifically, they pointed out that Number One Gir.l had to compete with rising Christmas songs, and cited Rosieâs many notable achievements. Here are some of the comments from netizens:
"It's normal to choose the song with the highest potential as the first release, so it was a suitable strategy for Rosé to release APT. and focus on promotions. Considering the timing and promotions, it's normal for Number One Gir.l and Toxic Till the End to attract less attention"
"The Ho.t 100 commentary is weird because it's not easy for K-Pop solo artists to make it on the list. Also, Rosé is doing well in terms of digital sales, but it's hard to rank these days because Christmas songs are dominating"
"Didn't the Grammys just say that Rosie sets Rosé apart from BlackPink and K-Pop? Why can't we discuss art instead of finding a song "disappointing" just because it didn't chart high?"
"Rosé is the most searched BlackPink member worldwide in the past 90 days and in every category despite having other nicknames (rose, rosie and roseanne park). Antis can say all they want, but Rosé's success is undeniable."
Previously, Rosé had been constantly ridiculed for the poor performance of Number One Gir.l. Specifically, the number of streams on Spotify on the day of Number One Gir.l's release reached 3,075,155, while APT. garnered more than 6.8 million streams on the first day. The song ranked 100th in the US, 31st globally, and was added to 194 global playlists. On the second day, the song dropped more than 335,000 streams even though her personal account has 56 million monthly listeners.
The achievement was not as resounding as APT. causing BlackPink's main vocalist to receive harsh words. On X (old Twitter), many posts attached with the phrase "Number thirty gir.l" attracted hundreds of thousands of views, implying that Rosé's new work only ranked 31st globally.
Some opinions say that the female singer born in 1997 revealed her weakness of not having a large fan base when she went solo, and her high achievements were largely thanks to the world-famous artist Bruno Mars.
On the Pannchoa community, Korean netizens said: "Without Bruno Mars, there's nothing left, just an empty shell", "Lisa and Jennie are both more prominent, Rosé doesn't have as much drama and has less anti-fans. If fans stay silent, there won't be unnecessary riots targeting artists. Since APT. debuted, they've been rioting everywhere"...
Fans defended the female idol, saying that Number one gir.l's first day of more than 3 million listens was not bad for a ballad song that was not promoted, only announced three days in advance, and only 19 hours to be recorded, with the MV randomly directed by Rosé.
