"When I was young, my father worked as a fisherman and brought back 10 brothers and sisters. I was the youngest child, so my father loved me the most. My mother sold porridge at the theater to feed artists. I often sat near my mother. , every night listening to them sing so much and then learn to follow along. Later, I was led by my brothers to sing in pagodas, communal houses, and shrines. When I was young, I sang all the songs. I remember that day I sang along with Ms. Ngoc Giau the love song. When I was a mother, I sang but the audience cried. Then I asked my parents to let me follow the troupe since I was 16. At that time people called me a child prodigy Thanh Quy", he recalled.

But because he was far from home, artist Phu Quy missed his family and escaped from the singing group to return to his hometown. Later, when he went to Saigon, he met a female zither with another troupe. By 1975, he did not pursue singing career but decided to work as a transport worker.

"My director at that day was very interested in art, so he set up a literary society to exchange. At that time, in the literary group, I won gold medals everywhere I went to competitions, which was broadcast on TV. Ms. Kim Cuong saw it. I just got someone to go to the Western bus station to find me. That was the milestone that brought me to the professional stage.
