Actress Pham Bingbing said that her absence from the screen for 4 years due to a tax evasion scandal is both a pity but also a blessing. She wanted to use the time she had left to make up for what had passed.

In October 2018, Fan Bingbing was investigated by the General Administration of Taxation of China for tax evasion, committing fraud through "yin-yang contracts". The incident led to her being fined and in arrears of 883 million yuan ($128 million). The actress later wrote a handwritten letter apologizing to the audience, but the public was still outraged. Leaders of the cultural industry issued a document "sealing" the actress during the past 5 years.
