After nearly 3 years as an actor, mainly playing supporting roles at the General Department of Logistics Drama Troupe, he passed the entrance exam to the Stage Directing major at the Vietnam Academy of Theatre and Cinema, now the Hanoi Academy of Theatre and Cinema, and then went to study abroad in Bulgaria in 1991.

With a handsome face, gentle appearance and acting talent, Tran Luc immediately impressed the audience through the role of Luc - a raft trader with a grumpy personality but very loving to his wife in the movie Love Story by the River.

That was also the springboard for him to be invited by many directors, both in the South and the North, to participate in the following movies: "The Life of a Street Singer" (as Hung), "The Indochina Affair" (as Minh), "Love Trap" (as Thanh), "Love Illusion" (as Tuan).

It can be said that at that time, Tran Luc was a popular male lead on the Northern screen when he knew how to combine his appearance and deep inner acting. Especially, in the period when the country opened up, cinema entered the market mechanism, screenwriters followed the trend of reflecting the reality of life, Tran Luc almost stuck with the image of a loyal man, living forever in the past and becoming out of place in an era dominated by money.

Along with the trend and taste of cinema of the audience in the open period, the characters played by Tran Luc won the special affection of the public. His name quickly became famous even though in reality, as many people thought, he was just an amateur actor.

In the 2000s, Tran Luc tried his hand at directing with two comedic films: "Hai Binh makes hydroelectric power" and "Who comes to visit during Tet this year?". The two films he directed won the Encouragement Prize from the Vietnam Cinema Association in 2001 and 2002. In addition, he founded Dong A Film Studio, took on the role of producer, director, and sometimes acted in television dramas.

Besides his roles as an actor, director, film studio owner, founder and operator of the independent theater Lucteam..., at the age of 60, Tran Luc is also famous on social networks. Recently, he made his mark with his role as a painter in the movies Dao, Pho and Piano.
