People's Artist Kim Lien - the unique Cheo voice of Thanh Nam, the golden lotus of the Vietnamese Cheo village, passed away after a long illness, at the ag.e of 84. She was once given touching poems by the late Foreign Minister Xuan Thuy.
The funeral for People's Artist Kim Lien will be held from 5:00 p.m. on May 25 in Nam Dinh City. The memorial service will take place at 6:30 a.m. on May 27. She will then be cremated at Thanh Binh Crematorium (Nam Dinh City) and buried at Xuan Trung Commune Cemetery, Xuan Truong District, Nam Dinh City.
People's Artist Kim Lien was born in 1942 in Nam Dinh province, and was the former Deputy Head of the Nam Ha Cheo Troupe (formerly). She possesses a rare golden voice and reciting voice in the art of singing Van, Cheo, and reciting poetry, and was the first person to bring Hat Van to the Voice of Vietnam radio station.
She was awarded the title of Meritorious Artist by the State in 1988 and People's Artist in 2015. People's Artist Kim Lien was once given the poem Pink Lotus by the late Minister of Foreign Affairs Xuan Thuy, with the touching verses: "Kim Lien is like a pink lotus/Nam Ha is like lake water in summer...".
The first time she met Uncle Ho was on May 21, 1963, when he visited Nam Dinh. On that occasion, People's Artist Kim Lien played the role of Tam in the excerpt of the Cheo play Life following the Party, taken from the play Chi Tam Ben Coc by author Tao Mat, performing for Uncle Ho and the working delegation.
The second time, on December 21, 1968 at the Presidential Palace, she recited excerpts from Kieu meeting Kim Trong and Kieu at Ngung Bich tower for Uncle Ho to enjoy. The third time, People's Artist Kim Lien was chosen by Uncle Ho to recite the poem wishing him a happy New Year in the Year of the Rooster 1969 broadcast on the Voice of Vietnam radio - because her voice was clear, expressive and expressed the true spirit of Uncle Ho's poetry. The last time she met Uncle Ho was on July 16, 1969, when Uncle Ho awarded her a badge and invited her to have dinner with him.
Moved by the story about Uncle Ho, artist Kim Lien said that she was also given a wooden ruler engraved with the three letters "SNK" (Think - Think - Be Careful) by Uncle Ho himself. When I expressed my desire to see the ruler, she said that after keeping it with her for decades, in 2008, she gave it back to the Ho Chi Minh Museum for safekeeping, because she thought that this memento was now a national asset and not hers anymore. "Keeping the ruler with me, I always keep in mind Uncle Ho's teachings. Whatever I do, I must think carefully, thoroughly and make decisions cautiously, with emotion and reason. Especially in art, I always constantly learn, explore and create in my acting, hoping to portray the character's personality, and make my singing voice clear, sweet and passionate. Until now, I still hear Uncle Ho's teachings ringing in my ears, wanting to pass them on to the next generation to learn and follow," People's Artist Kim Lien said.
For nearly 30 years since her retirement, she has always thought that "one small swallow does not make a spring", so she is very interested in teaching the younger generation and those who want to learn to sing, because "they will be the extended arms so that traditional art is preserved, passed down and lives forever in today's life". She said that when many people are not yet interested in folk singing, the responsibility of the artist is to firmly grasp the singing style and especially to be creative in performing so that it is close, simple, and easy to touch people's hearts.
Every time Tet comes, artist Kim Lien's heart is filled with excitement, recalling memories of President Ho Chi Minh, remembering the time she recited the poem wishing a happy New Year in the year of the Rooster 1969 - the last New Year poem of beloved Uncle Ho. Echoing in the living room space in the middle of the house in Nam Dinh city, I once again heard the reciting voice of the talented female artist of this land: "Last year was a glorious victory/ This year the frontline will surely win even more/ For independence, for freedom/ Fight to make the Americans leave, fight to make the puppets fall/ Forward! Soldiers, compatriots/ North and South reunite, what spring is happier than this". It must be affirmed that ag.e - something that many people are afraid to face, does not make the reciting voice of People's Artist Kim Lien no less warm, passionate and lyrical.
Even at the ag.e of 80, she still tirelessly works in the arts. Her contribution to Hat Van is priceless. She is a shining example of passion for the profession, the spirit of continuous learning and the will to improve, leaving behind valuable achievements in the career of national arts.
Composer Mai Van Lang - Head of Folk Songs and Traditional Music Department, Voice of Vietnam Radio - affirmed that thanks to the voice of artist Kim Lien on the Radio, Hat Van was restored, and the art of Hat Van in Hau Bong was recognized.
"At the ag.e of 80, she is still passionate about traditional art and continues to work tirelessly. Her contributions to Hat Van are priceless. She is a worthy example of passion for her profession, always striving to learn, improve, and achieve outstanding achievements in her artistic activities," said composer Mai Van Lang.
"She has gone to the ancestors of the profession, with the famous Cheo singing trio Kim Lien - The Tuyen - Xuan Thieu... and left for posterity a whole Moon Season dedicated to Uncle Ho through her unique Chau Van singing voice. I admire and will always miss her," director Do Duy Thong expressed.
Meritorious Artist Ngoc Son (Military Cheo Theater) once said that he came to the art of singing Cheo and singing Van from the inspiration of listening to People's Artist Kim Lien sing on Voice of Vietnam Radio when he was young. And I think not only Ngoc Son, many other artists also nurtured their passion for traditional art from the gifted voice of People's Artist Kim Lien.
Composer Mai Van Lang, Head of the Folk Song and Traditional Music Department of Voice of Vietnam, affirmed: "It is from the voice of artist Kim Lien on the Radio that Hat Van has been restored, and the art of Hat Van in Hau Bong has been recognized. It can be said that her whole life has always been devoted to folk art, and she can sing at any time when the audience and listeners request. Now, at the ag.e of 80, she is still passionate about folk art and still works tirelessly. Her contribution to Hat Van is priceless. She deserves to be an example of passion for her profession, always striving to learn, improve, and achieve outstanding achievements in artistic activities."
Only by seeing with her own eyes the certificates of merit, certificates of merit and medals at national professional theater festivals and competitions in her family's living room can one see that she has gone through a process of enthusiastic and vibrant artistic activities and achieved many outstanding achievements. It is not an exaggeration to say that she is one of the most prominent faces of the Cheo and Van singing villages of Thanh Nam. Pointing to the medal hung solemnly, she said: "This is the first medal of my life: Silver Medal for the role of Xuan Phuong (aka Thi Phuong) in the play "Doi Ngoc Luu Ly" at the National Professional Theater Festival in 1962, when I was only 20 years old. In my youth, my enthusiasm and passion led me to perform everywhere, from the battlefield to the countryside. In general, wherever there was an audience, we went and sang passionately and enthusiastically".
