When she was young, Van Dung lived with her parents in Thai Nguyen. When she was 3-4 years old, she liked to act out plays with her older sister Van Trang, sometimes pretending to be a princess, sometimes transforming into a magical fairy.

In second grade, Van Dung's family moved to Hanoi. Van Dung cried like rain because she had to leave her friends and her hometown, but later she had to thank her mother: "This was a right decision of my mother. Because if it weren't for that day, I wouldn't have been able to study fully and mature like today. Maybe now I'm herding buffaloes and cutting grass or going to the forest to collect firewood. At first, all four of them lived at their grandparents' house in Quan Thanh, but it was too crowded, so when Van Dung was 10 years old, her parents decided to move to a small house in Hoang Cau - which is also where Van Dung lives now. At that time, her house was only 6 square meters wide, with only a 1.6 meter bed, a study table, a kerosene stove, a pot, a pan and a bicycle. Every time it rained, the house was flooded, pots and pans were floating around.

At that time, Van Dung's biological mother still had to work, so her two daughters learned to do housework early. At that time, Van Dung had to carry up to twenty buckets of water every day for the whole family's daily needs. The water was not carried in small plastic buckets, but in large metal buckets.
