In second grade, Van Dung's family moved to Hanoi. At first, all four of them lived at their grandparents' house in Quan Thanh, but it was too crowded, so when Van Dung was 10 years old, her parents decided to move to a small house in Hoang Cau - which is also where Van Dung lives now. At that time, her house was only 6 square meters wide, with only a 1.6 meter bed, a study table, a kerosene stove, a pot, a pan and a bicycle. Every time it rained, the house was flooded, pots and pans were floating around.

At that time, Van Dung had to carry up to twenty buckets of water every day for the whole family's daily needs. The water was not carried in small plastic buckets, but in large metal buckets.
