Going fishing together to relieve stress, the group of friends unexpectedly caught a "monster" weighing more than 100kg, and that 5 people could not lift it. It is known that this "sea monster" is also known as the "treasure" of the river region.
Video capturing the moment of a group of people fishing on the Chao Phraya River in Ang Thong province, Central Thailand, on September 23 has attracted great attention. The most notable thing in the video is the image of a giant catfish "monster", weighing up to 100kg.
According to the report, a group of 5 friends invited each other to go fishing for fun. While they were fishing for carp, they suddenly saw a giant creature grab the bait. After that, the animal dragged the group of people and their boat more than 1km away. Even though they had a lot of experience, they had to face and struggle with it for nearly an hour.
After struggling to drag the "sea monster" to shore, everyone was shocked to see that it was as big as an adult. When weighed, the weight was more than 100 kg. These men shared that they had caught many big fish in the past, but had never caught one as big as the fish that the five people had just caught this time.
It is known that the giant fish accidentally caught was a Catfish. This type of fish comes from the Mekong basin area. This is the largest freshwater fish on the planet, able to reach a length of up to 3 meters and weigh up to 300kg when it exists in its natural environment. Catfish is often called the "monster" of the Mekong River. This fish species once appeared in Vietnam but is in danger of extinction in the wild.
This is not the first time a case has been recorded where people went fishing but accidentally caught a giant "sea monster". Around the world, there was once a 31-year-old British man who accidentally caught a super "huge" catfish. Jonathan went to Spain for his vacation. With a hobby of fishing, he went to the Serge River to sit and cast his rod. After 15 hours of patiently waiting and "exerting" all his strength, he "pulled" a giant fish 3.2m long and weighing more than 100kg to shore.
Previously, in Can Tho city, Vietnam, Ms. Le Hong Cam and her husband (35 years old, living in Phong Dien district, Can Tho city) and many people pulled the pond to check the "huge" herd of catfish, each weighing from 100kg. - 150kg. This is considered the largest herd of catfish in the West. Each animal requires 3-4 people to carry it.
This fish species once appeared in Vietnam but is in danger of extinction in the wild. Since 2012, Nha Trang University has successfully researched a project to raise catfish, which can be used in seed production and applied in commercial fish farming.
Ms. Cam shared that about 4 years ago, she and her husband looked to buy large-sized catfish to release into the pond on their property.
"My husband and I want to preserve the rare and unique fish species of the Mekong River, so we search everywhere to buy them. Whenever we hear about where we can catch catfish or giant barb, we go directly to them. bought them to preserve. Over time, we have collected 40 pangasius fish," Ms. Cam said.
In 2021, she and her husband hired someone to pull the fish up for a health check. Each fish then weighed 70 - 80kg.
She and her husband decided to pull the fish up to check and catch some of them and put them in a glass pond, a lake with a rockery on display for everyone to admire.
"Because the weight of the fish was so huge, we had to mobilize dozens of people to pull and catch the fish and move them to the display lake," Ms. Cam said.
Ms. Cam is also raising hundreds of barbel fish, grass carp, flag fish... weighing dozens of kilograms each. It is known that the value of this "treasure" fish is about 200,000 VND/kg.
However, currently in our country, catfish are being protected by authorities and banned from commercial fishing and trading because of their rarity.
Individuals and organizations are only allowed to exploit for conservation, scientific research, research to create initial seed sources or international cooperation but must be approved in writing by the Directorate of Fisheries and Report to the Directorate of Fisheries on implementation results.
"Decree 42 of the Government also only generally states that those who illegally exploit endangered, precious, and rare aquatic species in group 1 but do not reach the level of criminal prosecution must be subject to administrative sanctions. It is not clear at what level. Specifically, in Clause 3, Article 8 of this Decree, individuals who illegally exploit fish weighing 100kg or more will be subject to the highest administrative fine of 100 million VND" - Mr. Tuan affirmed.
