Reaction from Lisa's fans after frankly criticizin.g her new album, the music critic took evidence from the album of Hoang Thuy Linh and some Vietnamese artists to respond.
Recently, a review by music website Pitchfork about Lisa's solo album "Alter Ego" caused controversy on social networks. The person who directly evaluated this album was Joshua Minsoo Kim. Critics gave "Alter Ego" a score of 5.2 out of 10 and had harsh, sarcasti.c criticism.
"Lisa, a member of the record-setting K-pop gir.l group BLACKPINK, needs to convince you that she has depth without her fellow group members. But Alter Ego proves that she doesn't have that.
Alter Ego, like many of BLACKPINK's recent productions, doesn't try anything daring... 'Born Again' is a mediocre disco song in the style of Dua Lipa. 'Dream' is a shallow ballad...", commented Joshua Minsoo Kim.
The critic continued: "When she is given the task of performing a song, the songs get boring. She performs as the second-place Cardi B in 'Fxck Up The World', and it wasn't until Future appeared that we heard some personality. Just one sentence in "Fxck Up the World" summed up the whole experience: They want the old Lisa, so listen to my old music. It's hard to imagine who wouldn't want to do that."
Although I know that Pitchfork is a famous website with strict reviews. Many artists with commercially successful albums have received low scores from this specialized site. However, besides the concurring opinions, there are also many viewers who think that Joshua Minsoo Kim's expression of Lisa's album is "too harsh" and like it was created to "incite rage".
Fans of BLACKPINK's youngest brother criticized Joshua Minsoo Kim for being unprofessional when he posted on Instagram: "I wrote about this terrible album during my lunch break." After that, the critic shared on X (old Twitter) the receipt of hundreds of conical messages from K-pop fans after the review.
Not letting himself suffer, Joshua Minsoo Kim frankly responded: "People ask us how we rate the album on Pitchfork, I will reveal to you a secret: If you make bad music, you will get a low score and if you make good music, you will get a high score."
Although the review of Jennie's album "Ruby" has not officially appeared on the Pitchfork site, Joshua Minsoo Kim revealed that he has heard and felt that Jennie's album is better than Lisa's.
Notably, when one of BLACKPINK's youngest siblings said that Joshua Minsoo Kim expressed his xenophobia through his music reviews: "You don't like Alter Ego because it comes from Southeast Asia. No one in a sober mind can say that Ruby is better than Alter Ego."
In response to this view, the critic responded as follows: "Many Lisa fans think that I hate Southeast Asian musicians, but I am the only person who has ever reviewed a Vietnamese pop album for Pitchfork. I have also reviewed other albums by Vietnamese artists.
You have to understand that, when you make good music, you will get high scores." Along with his response, Joshua Minsoo Kim shared about the albums of Vietnamese artists that he has scored. In particular, Hoang Thuy Linh's album "Link" received a score of 7.2/10, to prove that she is really fair when evaluating a music product.
Not only Pitchfork, but most of the major music review sites also have not very positive comments about Lisa's "brainchild". Accordingly, The Times scored 3/5 points, commenting that Alter Ego is a collection of all movements that are "viral" today, in order to serve the audience who always thinks that idols must be perfect. Meanwhile, Rolling Stone scored 3.5/5 and NME gave it 3/5. These two pages both commented that the album of the beauty of the Golden Temple was discrete, patchy, and lacked the artist's individuality.
