Huynh Lap's Ancestral House "Kille.d" the entire Vietnamese box office, holding the top 1 throne

According to statistics from Box Office Vietnam (an independent box office monitoring unit), as of the morning of February 22, "Ancestral House" by director Huynh Lap surpassed 50.6 billion VND in revenue after 1 day of release.

Previously, statistics from the distributor's representative showed that in just 6 hours of opening ticket sales for the first screening, the film sold 120,000 tickets. Since the evening of February 19, Box Office Vietnam has recorded that "The Ancestors' House" has led in ticket sales for the day.

By February 21, the film also led the box office revenue by day, reaching over 6 billion VND out of a total of 4,715 screenings and 75,256 tickets sold. Notably, the achievement of "The Ancestors" far surpassed the revenue of the second highest-grossing film of the day, "The Dark Nun". The Korean-produced film, starring Song Hye Kyo, only reached over 475 million VND, over 1,199 screenings and 4,976 tickets sold.

Foreign films released on Valentine's Day (February 14) quickly lost their appeal, such as "Captain America: Brave New World" and "Rider: Delivering Goods to Ghosts" which earned over VND295 million and over VND134 million respectively on February 21. Three Vietnamese films, "The Four Guardians", "Billionaire Kiss", and "Ghost Lights", released on Lunar New Year, also saw a decrease in revenue and screenings.

"The Ancestors' House" is a horror comedy. The film revolves around the family of Gia Minh (Huynh Lap) and My Tien (Phuong My Chi). My Tien is a Gen Z content creator who is not really interested in ancestor worship and traditional customs.

Everything changed when she unexpectedly saw Gia Minh (Huynh Lap) - her brother who passed away 10 years ago while filming a video with his best friend at the ancient house where her family lived. Gia Minh asked her to fulfill his wish to preserve the family home.

In the process, she resolves a long-standing conflict with her mother and discovers many secrets of family members. Many tragicomic situations occur when the two siblings try to keep the old house - which many relatives want to sell to divide the family property.

Since then, My Tien has also become more deeply aware of the value of organizing ancestor worship ceremonies, and has gone through a journey of changing her perspective, discovering and preserving the nation's precious customs.

Director Huynh Lap said that the film has spiritual elements, but that is not the main theme he wants to convey. The destination of "House of Ancestors" is family affection.

"The Ancestral House" is Huynh Lap's second film, after "The Blind Sorcerer" (revenue of over 60 billion VND, 2019). The director said that in the past, he has studied and watched many Vietnamese films. With "The Ancestral House", Huynh Lap changed the distribution of characters. He is no longer the central character, but the family is the center. All the characters that appear complement and complete the story about family and love.

However, this makes Huynh Lap face many challenges, especially the problem of having to upgrade his product to the level of cinema, instead of just a normal web drama.

In particular, the unexpected highlight of the film comes from the performance of Phuong My Chi - a young singer trying her hand at cinema for the first time. Previously, many people were concerned about her acting ability when she had to stand in the same frame with a cast of veteran actors. However, Phuong My Chi proved her ability with a natural, emotional performance, far exceeding the initial expectations of the public.

In addition to positive feedback about the acting and music, "The House of the Immortals" also received some comments from experts about the filming techniques. Many opinions said that the film still lacks cinematic angles, and some scenes still bear the mark of a web-drama.

Especially at the end, the work was commented to have compressed too many dramatic details. Regarding these comments, Huynh Lap frankly admitted and said that he himself also saw the points that needed to be improved after reviewing the work.
