Vietnamese film "Ancestral House" - directed by Huynh Lap, starring Phuong My Chi - quickly topped the box office and earned nearly 100 billion VND. This success helped the project surpass its competitors, pushing films by Thu Trang and Tran Thanh to a lower position.
As expected, the Vietnamese film The Ancestors' House quickly defeated many competitors to rise to the top of the weekend rankings of Box Office Vietnam (an independent box office observation unit).
The appearance of the Korean horror film Dark Nuns also contributed to changing the box office situation, "kickin.g" Tran Thanh's film out of the top 5 of the overall chart.
The Ancestral House is a Vietnamese film directed by Huynh Lap. The work brings together many familiar faces such as Meritorious Artist Hanh Thuy, Meritorious Artist Huynh Dong, Puka, Trung Dan, Kieu Linh, Le Nam. Notably, Phuong My Chi also plays the main role in the film, which is a factor that makes many viewers curious.
During the three-day weekend, the film earned more than VND66 billion with about 752,000 tickets sold in more than 11,000 screenings. This figure increased more than 2.4 times compared to Last week's Silver Kiss (VND27 billion), partly helping the box office to become more active again.
The Ancestral House tells the story of My Tien (Phuong My Chi), a Gen Z gir.l who works as a content creator and is famous for posting videos on social media. After many years, the character returns to the ancestral house and unexpectedly sees the spirit of her deceased brother Gia Minh (Huynh Lap).
From then on, the two brothers planned to keep the house that was being disputed by relatives, and at the same time help Gia Minh to be able to be liberated.
When it was released, The Ancestors' House received mixed reviews from the audience. Most of them praised Phuong My Chi's performance, but Huynh Lap's script was too broad, making the film a bit too spread out.
Some opinions say that the film lacks cinematic quality, many segments have camera angles and images that evoke the feeling of a web drama. The poor special effects are also a factor that makes the project lose points.
However, in just the first two days of release, Nha Gia Tien has earned more than 30 billion VND, knocking down Thu Trang's Nu hon bac bien to top the chart. Up to now, Huynh Lap's film has earned more than 95 billion VND and will continue to accelerate in the box office race.
Coming in second place is the horror film Dark Nuns - marking Song Hye Kyo's return after 10 years of absence from the silver screen, which caused a fever at the Korean box office last month. Unfortunately, the project received mixed reviews about its quality. The film's content is simple, revolving around the exorcism journey of two nuns. The script also has many limitations that prevent Song Hye Kyo from shining despite her efforts in acting.
During the three-day weekend, Dark Nuns earned 6.2 billion VND, only 1/10 of what Nha gia ancestor earned. This achievement makes it difficult for the film to create a fever similar to last year's Quat mo trung ma.
After two weeks at the top of the chart, Thu Trang's Billion Dollar Kiss dropped to third place on the chart with 4.3 billion VND at the box office, bringing the total revenue to over 206 billion VND. This achievement helped Thu Trang become the first Vietnamese female director to have a film surpass the 200 billion VND mark.
The remaining two positions in the top 5 of Box Office Vietnam are the blockbuster Captain America: New World (4.2 billion) and the Thai comedy Rider: Ghost Delivery (over 1.9 billion).
Both films dropped in ratings, partly showing the great appeal of The Ancestors. If they did not have to compete with Vietnamese films, it is likely that the films could have achieved even better revenue.
Similarly, Ghost Light also cooled down, falling to sixth place with over 1.6 billion VND at the end of the week, total revenue has exceeded 104 billion VND.
Tran Thanh's The Four Guardians continued to fall in rank, dropping to seventh place with over 1.3 billion VND at the weekend, total revenue of over 330 billion VND. In addition to the top 5 films, many projects from Hollywood did not attract the attention of the audience. The horror film The Wolfman opened unimpressively at Vietnamese theaters with 257 million VND at the weekend.
Similarly, The Companion or Miss Jones: The Fall of You also failed to sell well with few screenings. All three failed to make it into the top 10 of the Box Office Vietnam chart.
