Sudden dull pain in the epigastrium, intermittent pain, this person thought he had a stomachache and then bought his own medicine. Ten days passed, still not getting better, forced to be hospitalized urgently.
Recently, the Department of Respiratory - Gastroenterology Department of Phu Tho Provincial General Hospital has just received a female patient with NTH (44 years old, living in Yen Lap, Phu Tho) with abdominal pain continuously for the past 10 days.
After the patient was admitted to the hospital and examined, the doctors diagnosed Ms. H with intestinal obstruction due to food residue in the stomach. According to them, this is the second case within a month with the same cause of intestinal obstruction due to bamboo shoots.
Ms. H said that she used to eat bamboo shoots a l.ot before, when she felt a dull pain in the epigastric area, cramping pain accompanied by a burning sensation, so she just thought she had a common stomach ache and spontaneous buy medicine to drink.
However, 10 days later, her condition still did not improve, so she was urgently hospitalized at Phu Tho Provincial General Hospital for examination. Here, the patient learned that he did not have stomach pain, but had a mass of food residue in it, leading to intestinal obstruction.
According to doctor Hoang Dieu Huyen, who directly treated the patient, shared: "After examining and doing tests and gastroscopy, the results showed that the patient had gastritis, a mass of stomach food residue. thick.
The patient was assigned to fast, infusion, intravenous nutrition, drink Coca-Cola for 2 consecutive days, 4.5 liters per day, to reduce gastric secretion. On the third day, look back at the food residue that has completely dissolved."
Doctor Huyen also said that fortunately, patient H had come to the hospital, so it was detected and treated promptly. If this condition is detected late, not treated early, there is a high risk of toxicity, intestinal n.ecrosis, multi-organ failure, even d.eath.
After nearly 1 week of treatment at the Department of Respiratory - Gastroenterology, patient H was discharged and the doctor prescribed more medicine for her to take at home.
Before Ms. H, Phu Tho Provincial General Hospital had received another case in the emergency room with abdominal distension, nausea and cramping pain. She is a female patient (40 years old, in Viet Tri, Phu Tho) with a history of stomach cancer, having undergone chemotherapy. But only once, this person then refused to continue, switched to a macrobiotic diet and recently she ate a large amount of jackfruit.
Through examination and abdominal CT scan results, the diagnosis of intestinal obstruction due to food residue was confirmed. The patient is prescribed gastric tube placement, intravenous fluids, complete parenteral nutrition, use of d.rugs to soften food for easy digestion and pain relief.
By the afternoon of the same day, after the follow-up period, the condition did not improve, and the solid food did not pass through the blocked intestine, the doctors of the Department of General Surgery consulted and decided to perform surgery on the patient. .
MSc Tran Thanh Tung - Head of the Department of General Surgery shared: "The surgical method of laparotomy is to access and release the area of intestinal obstruction caused by food residue. The food block causes the blocked intestine to thicken and block. normal circulation of the gastrointestinal tract. After nearly 2 hours of surgery, the doctors have completely removed the food residue, re-establishing the circulation of the digestive tract."
Notably, this patient had undergone gastric bypass surgery, to treat stomach cancer 2 years ago. Therefore, the stomach's ability to contract and crush food is not effective, when eating a l.ot of foods with fiber such as jackfruit has created a burden on the digestive system, resulting in food residue being pushed into the small intestine, causing food p.oisoning. stagnation and hard compression leads to intestinal obstruction.
After the surgery was successful, the patient's condition was stable and electrolytes were restored, antibiotics were given, and oral re-feeding with food, liquid nutrition and solid nutrition gradually improved over the next 7 days.
As doctors said, intestinal obstruction due to food residue is common in the elderly, young children and people with underlying diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. The use of a large amount of food containing a l.ot of tannins (jackfruit, persimmon, guava, ...) or containing fiber residues such as bamboo shoots... is one of the risks of food residue formation during the process. Digest.
In particular, if eaten on an empty stomach, when the stomach is empty, the concentration of stomach acid is high, the fruit has a l.ot of fiber, the resin is easy to precipitate, which will bind the plant fiber fibers, forming a solid residue. .
At this time, the patient will have common symptoms such as: epigastric pain, abdominal distension, flatulence, vomiting, nausea, bloating after eating, ... so the doctor recommends, when experiencing the above signs , patients need to go to a medical facility for examination, determine the cause and timely treatment, to avoid life-threatening bowel obstruction complications.
