The Chinese animated series Na Tra not only caused a fever domestically but also left a deep impression on the international market.
The first part Na Tra: Ma Dong Giang The (2019) - grossed more than 742 million USD worldwide.
With profound content, spectacular effects and humane messages, the film has positioned director Sui Cao's name on the world cinema map.
Not stopping there, the second part Na Tra: Ma Dong Nao Hai (2025) - made an even bigger achievement when reaching a global revenue milestone of 15.7 billion yuan (equivalent to more than 2.1 billion USD), currently ranked 5th in the list of highest-grossing films of all time worldwide, surpassing many Hollywood blockbusters. At the Hua Biao Awards ceremony on April 27 - one of the three most prestigious film awards in China - Na Tra 2 was honored in the category of Film with Special Contribution. However, director Sui Cao did not appear on stage, but producer Wang Changtian received the awar.d on his behalf.
On Weibo, the keyword "Sui Cao closed to make Na Tra 3" immediately became a ho.t search, attracting millions of interactions. The director confirmed that he was focusing all his efforts on the third part and said that this would be a work with a level of complexity far exceeding that of part 2. Therefore, the production time is expected to last up to 5 years. However, fans are still patiently supporting. Many comments were left with a positive attitude: "No need to rush, we can wait, as long as it is really good."
Director Sui Cao's real name is Duong Vu, born in 1980 in Sichuan province. Originally a pharmacy student, he started studying animation in his third year of university. Initially, he was ridiculed by his friends as a "dreamer", but he did not give up his passion. Before his success, Sui Cao had lived a difficult life for many years, without a stable job, only daring to buy discounted items at supermarkets, and rarely changing his clothes.
Despite the hardship, his mother - who lives on a pension of less than 1,000 yuan a month - always believed in and encouraged him to pursue an artistic career. In 2008, he first touched glory when his first short animated film won more than 30 domestic and international awards.
With two parts of the film Na Tra, Sui Cao has become the most successful Chinese director at the box office, surpassing a series of veteran names in the film industry.
The third part of Ne Zha is currently expected to be the next boost for Chinese animation cinema. After two parts that were both artistically and commercially successful, audiences believe that director Sui Cao will continue to bring a top-notch work, worthy of the wait.
After two parts, Na Tra not only conquered viewers with its special effects and music, but also with its depth of content, when depicting the journey of fightin.g fate and affirming the ego of a "ghost bo.y". In the first part, the character Na Tra was built as a rebel but with a kind heart, daring to face discrimination and ironic fate. In the second part, the story expanded to the world of the sea with complex relationships between races and the main character gradually became mature, taking on heroic stature.
With the third part, fans expect director Sui Cao to continue to expand the Eastern mythological universe, not only focusing on the individual Na Tra but also developing supporting characters such as Duong Tien, Than Cong Bao, or even adding elements from the legends Phong Than or Tay Du Ky. At the same time, profound issues about humanity, power, the choice between ideals and family are also expected to continue to be strongly exploited, surpassing the limits of a children's cartoon.
Some experts predict that Na Tra 3 will be the final part of this series - an "epic conclusion" that can bring the name of director Sui Cao closer to animation masters like Hayao Miyazaki or Pete Docter. Part 3 of Na Tra is expected to hit theaters in 2030.
