Until Mai Thien Van's mother discovered that she had cirrhosis of the liver and ascites, it was a difficult time for the whole family because there was not enough money to treat her mother. In the last days of her life, Mai Thien Van's mother silently used her actions to express her motherly love. "After my mother's death, I felt depressed. There were times when I wanted to leave the Catholic monastery and become a nun. The image of the nuns and pastors with me when I was a child is a beautiful image, I like it so much.
