Ly Nguyen - 9X once "carried" a 9.3 billion US PhD scholarship, received a crushing defeat to a senior scientist

5 years ago, Nguyen Thi Sao Ly (SN 1993, Da Nang) used to be a famous phenomenon when she was awarded scholarships by 8 prestigious universities in the US for PhD programs. These are the schools: MIT, Johns Hopkins, Cornell University, University of California San Diego, University of Chicago, Rice University, University of Texas Southwestern and Baylor University.

Overcoming more than 5000 talented candidates, Sao Ly excellently "held" a scholarship of 9.3 billion VND from Johns Hopkins University - a school in the top of the US universities and top 5 in the world in the field of medical research, with the world famous Johns Hopkins Hospital. Sao Ly is also known as one of the representatives of Vietnam at the 2nd Global Young Vietnamese Intellectuals Forum in 2019, with the mission of spreading and connecting the SARE education model - a project to stimulate the desire to learn of weak students through participation and practice in scientific research. Previously, Sao Ly graduated valedictorian in Biochemistry at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Sao Ly is also one of the special characters mentioned in the book "Glory of Vietnamese talents in five continents" and the program "America Journey" of the Association of Vietnamese Youth and Students in the United States.

Explaining for choosing to continue studying for a doctorate, Ms. Ly said that she is a person who likes academic fields, is passionate about research and manufacturing. The field of research always requires learners to explore, desire to discover and learn. "I myself did not choose to be a doctor because I found that my personality was quite suitable for the research path. Moreover, Ly herself did not have the courage to "face" when seeing the pain that the patient had to endure ", Sao Ly confided.

About the reason for choosing Hopkins, Ms. Ly shared that: "In the journey to find a PhD scholarship, I found that the environment here is very friendly, everyone always supports each other to achieve the best results. Besides, I believe that Hopkins - one of the best universities in the world for medical training, will be the place to incubate, give wings to her path to become a scientist and fly further."

From going to school to going to work, Sao Ly has the opportunity to experience in environments full of elite people. Therefore, it also encountered many difficulties, even failures and bruises. "The most recent failure and also the most painfu.l was in September 2022 - when I started looking for a job. I had to find a job as soon as possible because I will graduate from the PhD program in December. I have difficulty because at the en.d of the year, most of the positions are filled, the opening opportunities are not many. Moreover, companies will prioritize local people over international students like me.

Not only do I have to compete with natives, but I also have to compete with people who have been working for a few years after the PhD. At first, I applied and went to many interviews but did not receive an invitation. Actually, at that time, I was very depressed, doubting my ability. In the past, I've achieved certain achievements, so being in such a situation makes me feel like I'm not good enough to follow this path.

However, even though I was discouraged, I always tried to get rid of the panic. I started planning to hone my interview skills and application skills to create another opportunity. After 1-2 weeks to stabilize my mood, I continued to apply for a job and choose the right company.

Through that failure, I realized the most important thing is to always love yourself. I have been and am in that process, always looking in the mirror to accept who I am, even though there are still many unfinished things. This helps me become more confident, more positive energy. Only when you believe in yourself can you do a lot of meaningful things."

Initially, Ly had three interview invitations and failed on two of them. She has to spend time editing her profile, connecting with scientists in the industry, seeking advice. Ly then applied in many places, and was invited to interview by 8 companies in November 2022. Ly won 7 seats and decided to choose Intellia Therapeutics, a company founded by scientist Jennifer Doudna - winner of the 2020 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing mechanism.

Currently, Ly is living and working in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, becoming a mid-senior level scientist in the Research and Development department, researching to improve cell therapy by means of genetic modification to treat blood-related diseases, especially bloo.d cancer. Sao Ly revealed that the salary she received was quite good compared to that of a recent graduate in biomedical science in Boston.

Doing a PhD is a journey of personal growth and self-transcendence, according to Ly. The key to helping Ly overcome challenges is determination and the ability to allocate time and work properly. Ly said that she planned to work in detail, sometimes having to work more than 17 hours a day. In addition, she strives to build relationships with professors, colleagues in the school, as well as the forerunners in the biomedical industry.

"The path of pursuing a dream is not the same as anyone else's and everyone has challenges and hardships, as long as each person is motivated and persistent to follow the path set for themselves," Ly said.
