Now, after a long and resilient journey to fight the terrible disease of Parkinson's, she is back, bringing with her a story of overcoming the disease full of emotion and inspiration.
Born in 1975 in Ho Chi Minh City in a family with artistic traditions, living and settling in Austria. Since childhood, she was soon exposed to music when singing in the family band with her brothers.
In her teens, she not only impressed with her voice but also possessed an outstanding appearance, having won the title of beauty in the Vietnamese community in Austria and won the 2nd runner-up at the "Miss Saigon" contest in Paris. These milestones helped her enter the field of modeling before officially turning to singing.
In her heyday, Bao Han was considered one of the typical faces of overseas young music, prominent with her vibrant performance style, attractive choreography and bold image. Her performances are often associated with energetic music, making the audience dance to each beat. Therefore, her sudden disappearance from the stage around 2010 made many fans regret and ask many questions.
It was not until many years later that the female singer clearly shared the reason for the first time. She said she has Parkinson's - a chronic neurodegenerative disease that directly affects mobility. According to Bao Han, this is a disease that has no complete cure, only medication can be used to maintain mobility. If she doesn't take the medication, her body can fall into a state of convulsions, stiffness, and almost unable to function normally.
What makes her condition special is that the disease appeared quite early, when she was only about 40 years old - an age that is considered rare for Parkinson's. According to medical information, only about 5-10% of patients with this disease are under 50 years old. That made the psychological shock for the female singer even greater, because at that time she was still at the peak of her career and had many unfulfilled plans.
Not only affecting individuals, Parkinson's disease in Bao Han's case also carries genetic factors. She shared that there are many people in her family with the same disease, including her mother, uncle and brother. However, despite the same disease, each person has different manifestations, from mild to severe, showing the complexity and unpredictability of this disease.
The symptoms that Bao Han faced included tremors in her limbs, stiffening of the body, difficulty moving and loss of motor control. At one point, walking became a big challenge when her legs were frozen, making her unable to perform normal activities. This directly affects the performance work - which requires flexibility, endurance and the ability to master the body on stage.
Therefore, the female singer was forced to make the decision to stay away from the spotlight. She frankly said that she didn't want to appear when she couldn't fully dedicate, especially with an artist associated with dance like her. This is not only a professional choice but also a way for her to preserve her image in the hearts of the audience.
She said: "I retired in 2010. When I found out that I was sick and had to give up the stage, I was sad and I was miserable. Being on stage is a passion, a great feeling for me, but I can't do it anymore. I promised not to cry when I reiterated it, but I couldn't hold back.
On stage, I felt like I was at home because I was so comfortable and free. I get to do everything and feel like there's no place for me to feel like that.
Leaving the stage, I felt like I was forced to leave the house, no longer my house. I have lived alone for a long time, and my family is still in Austria, so I consider the stage and artists as my family, my second home."
Recently, Bang Kieu's ex-wife, singer Trizzie Phuong Trinh, urgently called on show organizers and colleagues to give Bao Han the opportunity to return to the stage, inviting her to sing in the show.
However, when she went on stage, Bao Han caused grief when she stood still, her body constantly convulsed.
One of the details that attracts the attention of many people is the fact that Bao Han has to take medication up to 6 times a day to maintain mobility. Her life has therefore been described as a "race against time and drugs". When the drug works, she takes advantage of everything such as cleaning, taking care of pets, answering messages. But when the medication wore off, her body could barely function, forcing her to lie down completely.
However, drugs are not always consistently effective. There were times when the drug worked well, but there were also times when it was almost ineffective, making her health condition erratic. This makes the singer's daily life very dependent on drugs and the time of use.
Not only facing physical difficulties, Bao Han also experienced a great mental shock when she found out that she had the disease. She once shared a feeling of self-pity when she was too young but had to face a chronic disease, which interrupted her dreams of performing and dedication. Having to accept this fact is not an easy process, especially for someone who has lived his life to the fullest on stage.
However, what surprised many viewers was the optimistic spirit of the female singer. Bao Han said that she always tries to keep a well-groomed image, take care of herself and even still wear makeup and dress beautifully even on tiring days. She once said that she wanted to be "the most beautiful Parkinson's patient", a positive outlook in the face of difficult circumstances.
Besides, the companionship of her family, especially her husband, also plays an important role in her journey to fight the disease. Words of encouragement and sharing helped her keep her spirit stable and continue to live positively. Currently, she lives with her family in the US after spending a long time in Austria.
