Ly Hai: "I was scared, lost all confidence and courage when holding the mic, feeling that singing was no longer as good as before"

Ly Hai has remarkable shares revolving around the movie Flip Face 6: The Fateful Ticket along with his experiences about career and family happiness next to his wife Minh Ha.

With Flip Face 6, the story revolves around a winning lottery ticket, this is a detail that makes many people think of another Korean movie, Suddenly won the lottery, what do you explain about this?

I wrote the script around March, April last year. The idea is of course already there, around May I also showed it on my personal page, that I finished the script. By July, I started to choose the scene and September was the casting. The day I held a press conference to announce my project, that Korean film had not been shown in Vietnam yet. That is the idea that I had before.

If the audience has not seen it, it may be a guess, but once you see it, you will notice that it is completely different. Just like about music, there are only 7 notes, but there are billions of users, each with different variations, different feelings, giving birth to many songs but not duplicates.

Making a movie project but with the content revolving around too many main actors, up to 6 people like in Flip Face 6, what management methods and rigors did you have during filming?

Of course, working with the six main actors would be very difficult. When everyone finished reading the script, I would spend time working with each of them one by one. After all was done, I gathered all the actors to work together as a team. At that time, everyone will talk, pairing together to see if it's okay. If during the dialogue there are conflicts, you have the right to correct them, but it is important to keep my main idea.

I also don't want to fix it again and again when the set is released. As everyone knows, a day of shooting costs a lot of things up to a very high number. If I make a set and still ask for correction, then my mind will definitely not focus, not knowing if the edited sentence is better than the original sentence or not. Therefore, when pre-production, I always tell everyone who wants to fix it, fix it now, and in the set, absolutely do not edit anything. Besides, in terms of costumes, I also do not allow actors to change and add to it on their own. Everything before that was calibrated and color-coordinated by me. Nothing more has changed.

Through each film project that you produce, besides satisfying your passion for art, what else do you want to convey to the audience?

In each of my scripts, I always put in it, there is never a shortage of humanity. Because for me, human love is very important, no matter who you are, what profession, how old you are, what your status is, your manners and humanity are always emphasized, in all circumstances. With Flip Face 6, I also inserted a small message. That is, no matter how much money you have, you will never be able to trade and buy happiness.

But the special thing about my film is that the messages, big or small, are only fleeting in the blink of an eye. However, after watching, you can summarize and then you can think and understand the problem.

Referring to the series Flip Face, people immediately think of Ly Hai, even though he is not the main actor in the film. The other actors, although participating in the main role and the number are also very large, but cannot remember their names. What do you think about this?

This is also a blessing that I get from the love of the audience. A special feature of the Flip Face series is that every year I change the script, each part is a different story, not duplicate. Actors through each part are the same. Furthermore, when I cast the actors, I don't care about the name of the ticket sales. Maybe because of that, people are more interested in me, curious what Ly Hai will do this year, what to send to the audience to see the movie.

Clashing with another Vietnamese blockbuster, Con Nhut, got her husband at the same time as Flip Face 6, what do you think about this issue?

If people follow, the annual Flip Face when I debut on the occasion of April 30, always encounters many other movies, even all Hollywood blockbusters. Therefore, the feeling of touching the film seems to me to have already aged. I just know how to make my product as good as possible to present to the audience, that's the most important thing.

In terms of revenue, what I care most about is the reception, progress and overcoming myself, that's the difficulty. As for getting ahead of anyone else, it doesn't matter to me, it doesn't matter. Whatever the revenue, for me it won. Winning emotionally, about the audience's love for me, that's a great happiness. Every year, I don't need to collect hundreds of billion, just break even.

The name Ly Hai with cinema only remembers with Flip Face, is he afraid of being bored by the public and thinking that he will turn to another content, another series?

In the 6 parts of Flip Face, I always change and try not to duplicate each part. I also turned to horror movies, which seemed unsuccessful but was quite resonant with the part of House with Guests. Or in Flip Face part 3, with the theme of the journey of 3 boys with disabilities, quite sensitive. Everyone in the industry when reading the script, everyone rejected, but in the end, I still resolutely followed to the end. The results, as everyone can see, have also been quite successful.

In my mind, I was also thinking about doing another series. But at that time, maybe I will stand behind, not directly directing and participating in production issues. I will make a different kind of film, assign some young crew to work. I will only contribute to the script for you guys.

Of all the parts of Flip Face, which part did you spend the most money on and found the most difficult?

To talk about all the parts of the Flip Face series, I think the most extreme and invested is part 5. I had to build the ferry, the car fell into the river, build a whole night market, combined with filming the market. floating, rivers, recreating the Cham village festival, Western buggy culture, ... it's one of the movies that I invested the most and filmed the most.

Why is he capable of acting but he did not participate in the main role in the recent parts of the series Flip Face?

Flipping Faces 1 and 2 I played the lead role, but after season 2 I fell and broke two ribs. After the fracture, in the hospital, I had a short period of time to think again. That was the scene where I fell in front of the truck, if it couldn't stop in time and run, I don't know what would happen. At that time, I suddenly had a terrible fear, so haunting that within a few weeks I slept and saw the top of the truck. After that, I didn't even dare to ride my motorbike on the street, it took a long time to return to normal. Honestly, I'm sure, I only went there because I was so scared that I didn't dare to play the main role anymore. Moreover, I also wanted to give the best to the director position, so I did not participate in the main role.

In Flip Face 6, the cameo is known to have 2 more children in your family, can you share more about this story?

The cameo role in this movie, with the participation of baby Sunny and baby Cherry, acted in a segment. Although it's only a short segment, it still has to be properly cast, not family members do whatever they want to do. After auditioning, it was enough to accept the role. But I also do not direct the children to follow the profession, the children like to participate, if not, never force their children.

The children participating did not ask for much, the sand was just 2 glasses of sugarcane juice. But the children love it, just go out to experience, go to the West of the river. That segment is also fast, with only a few simple lines, so the children memorize it quite easily.

His starting point was a singer, but now he has turned to filmmaking and directing. So what is your biggest passion right now?

In the past, I studied at the School of Theater and Cinema, I majored in acting, but also studied singing. But it can be said that I am right now with the profession I have studied. Do this, I love it.

Considered as one of the idols, a part of many people's youth, what do you think about this?

Those are the memories that I will always remember. Many of you have comments, I read very emotional. They have accompanied me since the early stages of my career, from when they were small with Lifetime with you. Even now as adults, they still follow and support me with the Flip Face series. Those feelings I always cherish and keep.

Do you plan to return with a musical short film, or organize a concert to pay tribute to your audience?

I have a plan but haven't done it yet. A few years ago, I intended to make an album, cover my songs. Because I'm lucky, in my singing career, I have a lot of hit songs. I want to remix it and send it to the audience, but I have thoughts but can't do it. There were times when I recorded a few songs, I felt like I wasn't as good at singing as I used to be. I became afraid, because a debut, a comeback but not good, the audience will be disappointed.

Do you regret giving up music and making movies?

I have regrets, but only sometimes, not much. I also understand one thing, I can't do both things well at the same time, singing and acting at the same time. Because now, I am also taking away a lot of family time, some of you also say that I am an exemplary man and father. However, when I heard it, I was very sorry, because I did not spend much time with my wife and children, did not fulfill my father's duties.

I only made one movie a year, but when I was about to complete it, I had to focus a lot on my brainchild, so I didn't have time to take care of my family.

Having a wife who is a producer and he is a director, have you ever had disagreements with Minh Ha at work?

Actually, I'm very lucky to have a companion who is my wife, because if I don't have one, it's quite difficult for me, causing me a lot of anxiety while working on the script. This is also a very good thing about Minh Ha, my wife always urges me, never tells me why he spends so much money, why he is like this, like that. Minh Ha, on the other hand, is always encouraging, following my will, being creative and doing whatever she wants, what is necessary and justifiable.

Having been together for decades, what makes his feelings and his wife's feelings always strong and attached?

Me and Minh Ha, outside working hours, we still have time together. Not going somewhere too far, the couple is too stressed, just go to the supermarket, go for a walk, eat together, go for coffee. But the best thing is to take the whole family out, seeing your children playing together is enough to be happy.

His wife Minh Ha used to be active in the arts before, but since he was with him, she retreated to work as his rear, do you feel that this is a disadvantage for his wife?

I still see that my wife is extremely happy, there is no disadvantage. My family is very open, if there is something you don't like, it is always ready to say it all, never to keep it in your heart. For example, if Minh Ha sees that I'm doing something wrong, my wife will speak up and give her feedback. When I hear it, I have to accept the correction, because I am also a human, not a god, so there must be times when I am wrong. It is important to know how to admit mistakes and correct them.
