"Mercenary" fascinated with Vietnamese history: African international student acting in Vietnamese films

Coming to Vietnam to study abroad, Oraiden Manuel Sabonete (23 years old), a third-year student majoring in Electrical Engineering at Hanoi University of Science and Technology, was chosen to play the role of a French soldier in the movie "Peach, Pho and Piano".

Even though he only plays a small role in the "fever" movie, Oraiden Manuel Sabonete still feels happy and satisfied. "I understand a little French and start participating in this movie in 2022 - 2023, playing the role of a French soldier. In this movie, I don't have many lines but I still feel very happy," Oraiden Manuel Sabonete said.

The script Peach, Pho and Piano is set in the winter-spring battle that lasted 60 days and nights from late 1946 to early 1947 in Hanoi.

The film depicts the most intense and heroic moments in the war of the capital's army and people, thereby not only praising the spirit of courage and patriotism but also deeply understanding and explaining the core character and qualities. of Hanoi people. Participating in the movie, Oraiden felt more understanding and loved Vietnamese history.

Oraiden Manuel Sabonete, born in 2000, is currently a student majoring in Electrical Engineering at Hanoi University of Science and Technology. Before coming to Vietnam to study, Oraiden had time to major in Computer Science at a top university in Mozambique.

In his second year of college, when he read information about scholarships to study abroad in Vietnam, Oraiden decided to apply immediately because he had learned about Vietnam through the foreign history program in 8th grade. In Oraiden's eyes at that time, Vietnam is "a famous rice exporting country, its people are very indomitable and resilient in the struggles against France and America".

Thanks to studying well in high school and always achieving near-perfect scores in English and Physics, Oraiden surpassed many other students and was accepted into the Electrical Engineering major at Hanoi University of Science and Technology.

"When I knew I was going to Vietnam, my parents said there was a war in Vietnam. But I said No, that's just history . Currently Vietnam is one of the safest places," Oraiden recalled.

According to Oraiden, when talking about a country's history, he loves to learn about that country's economy and finances. Therefore, Oraiden often learns about Vietnamese history, culture, and economy through books, newspapers, and Youtube.

Impressed by the foreign student who loved Vietnamese history, teachers at Hanoi University of Science and Technology encouraged Oraiden to participate in a number of competitions and scientific research. In 2021, Oraiden won the first prize for university-level scientific research students with the topic "Vietnam - Mozambique economic relations from the perspective of Vietnam's international economic integration policy".

In addition, he and his lecturers also participated in the political contest to defend the Party's ideological foundation, winning the national prospect award, first prize in the magazine category and second prize in the video category rewarded by the Hanoi Party Committee. .

In October 2023, Oraiden and two friends from Laos and Cambodia participated in the Vietnamese speech contest for foreign students studying in Vietnam, winning the Consolation Prize.

Each competition about history and culture seems to have nothing to do with improving "difficult" subjects, but Oraiden revealed that through competitions, in addition to learning more knowledge, he has gained more knowledge. friends, more vocabulary, more confidence so that if you find it difficult or do not understand, you can proactively ask teachers or friends, without being shy like before.

After 3 years of studying at Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Oraiden realized that his professional knowledge had improved a lot and he could confidently discuss with friends and teachers. He fell in love with Vietnam and the name his teacher gave him, Duc, and became more attached to the S-shaped country when his lover was a female student at Hanoi University!
