Le Van Khoa, a lifetime devoted to music, a Vietnamese soul that resonates across five continents. From the first notes to the stirring symphony "Vietnam 1975 Symphony", the life of this talented musician is a magical journey, connecting Vietnamese music with the world.
Musician Le Van Khoa, one of the great figures of Vietnamese music. With more than 600 works, from symphonies to children's music, from popular music to struggle music, Le Van Khoa has continuously contributed to Vietnamese and international music throughout his 90 years of life, clearly demonstrated through the theme "A Life for Music", as a guiding principle throughout his career.
Musician Le Van Khoa was born on February 2, 1933 in Can Tho, in a Protestant and Seventh-day Adventist family. From an early ag.e, he showed a strong passion for music. Although he did not have access to a piano or other musical instruments, Le Van Khoa taught himself music through French books. He often sat at his desk, tapping his fingers on the table to practice melodies in his mind, demonstrating the extraordinary determination and willpower of a self-taught musical genius.
Before 1975, Le Van Khoa was a musician, composer and founder of many music organizations in Vietnam. He began composing and performing musical works for children, with one of his outstanding works being the music collection Singing for Tomorrow. These compositions created a new wave in children's music at that time, warmly received by the younger generations.
After 1975, when his life was disrupted by war and political change, Le Van Khoa had to seek asylum in the United States. Despite the difficulties he encountered in his early days in a foreign land, music was always a great source of motivation to help him overcome the challenges. Here, he continued to compose and left a deep mark on the Vietnamese music community abroad.
Le Van Khoa composed a large number of musical works, including about 600 pieces of music and orchestral works. In particular, he was also the conductor of many symphony bands, notably the Vietnamese American Philharmonic, where he conducted major performances. His works are widely known, especially songs expressing patriotism and the desire for freedom.
One of his most notable works is Vietnam 1975 Symphony, a major work considered a "musical chronicle" of Vietnam, recording the historical events of the country through each period. Highly appreciated by experts, Vietnam 1975 Symphony not only reflects the pain, but also expresses the nation's desire for freedom and peace. This work is compared to Modest Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition", with each piece of music in the work evoking a vivid image of Vietnam during the war.
Le Van Khoa stands out for his ability to combine Vietnamese folk music with Western classical music, creating works that are full of cultural exchange. His works require a high level of understanding to enjoy, as was demonstrated by conductor Nguyen Khanh Hong, who said that the work Vietnam 1975 Symphony opened up a "bright Vietnamese sky", touching the hearts of those who enjoyed it.
Pianist Lyudmila Chichuk, who has had the opportunity to perform Le Van Khoa's works, also shared that his music is "very pure, full of humanity", and she hopes that these works will be widely performed around the world. The subtlety of each note, along with the deep emotions he puts into his works, have created a unique musical style that is difficult to mix.
In addition to his musical career, Le Van Khoa is also a talented photographer, whose photographic works have been exhibited in many countries and displayed at the Baltimore Museum of Art. He is the founder of the Association of Photographic Art in 1968 in South Vietnam and has taught photography at Salisbury State College.
Le Van Khoa is also an artist who struggles through music, with famous songs such as Truong Ca Que Huong Men Yeu, Tren Bien Ca, and Ca Ngoi Tu Do, works that reflect the pain and desire for freedom of the Vietnamese people during the dark years of the communist regime.
For Le Van Khoa, music is not just a profession but a burning passion, a "symphony of the universe", as he once shared. For him, a composer is just someone who records a small part of the great music of the universe, sharing emotions, souls and good things for humanity. His boundless passion for music, along with his deep love for his homeland and the ideal of freedom, are the factors that form his philosophy of life.
Le Van Khoa is not only a talented musician but also the pride of Vietnamese music. With his significant contributions, he has brought Vietnamese music to the world, demonstrating the talent and culture of the Vietnamese people. His works will forever be a precious heritage, so that future generations can understand and love Vietnamese music.
