Actress Lin Yi Chen, a familiar face to Asian audiences through the drama "It Started with a Kiss," recently surprised the public by recounting for the first time her near-death experience following brain tumor surgery performed many years ago.
Her sharing quickly attracted attention, because few people knew that behind the image of the always energetic actress on screen lay a period of serious health crisis.
In a television program broadcast on March 14th, Lin Yi Chen revealed that she underwent surgery in 2009 to remove a tumor in her pituitary gland. According to the actress, the cyst was located in the pituitary fossa and measured approximately 2 cm in diameter. Doctors warned that without timely intervention, the tumor could affect her vision and even cause loss of mobility. Therefore, surgery was necessary to avoid dangerous complications.
The surgery was performed using endoscopic surgery through the nose – a minimally invasive method that allows doctors to access the brain through the nasal cavity to remove the tumor without opening the skull. Despite being considered a modern technique, the surgery and recovery process was a difficult experience for the actress. She recalled lying in her hospital bed before the operation and wondering if she would regret it if her life ended at that moment. Her answer was yes, because there were still so many things in life she hadn't had the chance to experience.
After regaining consciousness, Lin Yi Chen recounted that her first feeling was panic upon realizing how close she had been to death. Blood flowing back into her mouth during the surgery made her feel as if she had just survived a major life event. "When I woke up after the surgery, I realized just how close I was to death," the actress shared on the program.
The recovery process lasted for months and was far from easy. Lin Yi Chen had to cope with severe headaches, vomiting, and mental breakdown. At one point, she said she cried to her mother for days on end due to the psychological pressure and fear of her illness. For an artist whose career was flourishing, having to temporarily stop working for treatment was not a simple decision.
When asked what might have led to her illness, Lin Yi Chen attributed it partly to her lifestyle and work pressure during her early days in the entertainment industry. She admitted to working intensely for a period, frequently staying up late, and putting immense pressure on herself to pursue her career. According to the actress, the accumulated fatigue over a long period could have seriously affected her health.
"I thought I could handle staying up late constantly. But the fatigue accumulated over time eventually exploded," she shared, recalling that period. This experience completely changed Lin Yi Chen's perspective on work and life.
After the surgery, the actress said she started living more slowly and paying more attention to her health. While she used to be willing to work herself to exhaustion to maintain her career in the entertainment industry, she now prioritizes work-life balance. When asked if she feared losing career opportunities by reducing her workload, Lin Yi Chen frankly stated, "Now I only fear losing my life."
The actress's sharing quickly attracted attention on social media because many people realized that staying up late and overworking are common habits in modern life. Lin Yi Chen's story is seen as a reminder to listen to your body and not ignore health warning signs.
From an artist who once threw herself into work with intense dedication, Lin Yi Chen says she now cherishes every moment of life. After her health setback, what preoccupies her most is not fame or career success, but the simple experiences she hasn't had the chance to have.
The near-death experience she had years ago became a major turning point in the actress's life. Not only did it change her lifestyle, but Lin Yi Chen also frequently reminds her audience not to underestimate their health and not to overwork themselves to the point of exhaustion. According to her, career success becomes meaningless if it comes at the cost of one's life.
Lin Yi Chen's story is therefore not just a recollection of a dangerous surgery, but also a cautionary tale about the pressures of modern life. Ultimately, what she realized is simple yet crucial: health and life are the most precious things.
