Failing, Thang then "invested" to open a YouTube channel covering many hit songs at home and abroad but still not very successful. Ventured into showbiz unsuccessfully, Thang developed the idea of robbing a bank. On 8/10/2020, Thang went to buy items such as gas cylinders, wires, flashes, gasoline, fire torches ... to prepare for a bank robbery.

At noon on October 10, Thang wore a cap, mask, dark glasses, a long-sleeved shirt, and walked with a backpack to a bank branch on Truong Vinh Ky Street, Tan Phu District. Stopped by security guards because the bank was off, she asked to go inside to "get things to forget." Thang went straight to the counter where two female employees were cleaning, preparing to close the door. She set her bag open, revealing multiple mini gas canisters, gas bottles, flashing lights, etc. Say "this is a bomb", ask the bank employee to "walk out into the middle of the room".

Next, Thang took a bottle of gasoline and a flame torch device that threatened to "explode", forcing bank employees to put VND 2.2 billion in his pocket. Thang then fled, jumped into a taxi and escaped towards Go Dau Street but was quickly arrested 3 hours later.

In court, the defendant explained that the offence was to follow the "dream" and to validate the dream.

The 26-year-old testified that she only went online to see the shape of the explosive ball, not how it was made. The explosives the accused took to rob the bank were intended to intimidate, not injure anyone. "The defendant knew his conduct amounted to robbery and therefore had no idea. The defendant himself dared to do it.

Before robbing, the defendant thoroughly researched the amount of punishment he might face. The defendant foresaw the future, only following his "dream," Thang testified in the court of first instance.

During the investigation, Thang stated that the motive for the robbery was debt. Explaining this testimony, the defendant said that he wished the case to end quickly and if he testified due to a "dream", he would be sent to a psychiatric evaluation.

The female defendant asserted that she worked in many professions and could afford to pay off debts, so there was no robbery because of debt. On 3/6/2022, Senior TAND in Ho Chi Minh City. The appeals court reduced Phung Thi Thang's sentence from 19 years to 18 years for robbery. The Board accepted part of defendant Thang's appeal that the damages in the case had been remedied, and that the defendant's family had merit.
