Hoshi ( SEVENTEEN ) caused a stir when he "liked" a video recreating the 2019 MAMA stage with a caption mentioning his defeat to BTS. This small action unexpectedly sparked a fierce debate between fans of the two groups.
Kpop social networks have just experienced a stir when Hoshi - a prominent member of SEVENTEEN suddenly became the center of criticism. Specifically, Hoshi "liked" a video on Instagram recording SEVENTEEN's top performance at the 2019 Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA). However, the caption accompanying the video caused a fierce debate in the online community.
Hoshi's interactive video captured SEVENTEEN's passionate performance of HIT at MAMA 2019 , with the cryptic caption: "Never forget SEVENTEEN's performance of HIT at MAMA 2019 - right after they lost the Best Dance Performance award."
At first glance, this is just an emphasis on the impressive stage that year. However, looking back at history, the award that year was given to BTS. This immediately divided the fan community: one side thought the post was meant to be regretful for SEVENTEEN, while the other side speculated that this was a way to "indirectly" target BTS - the winning group.
As soon as Hoshi's likes screenshots went viral on Twitter, TikTok, and various Kpop forums, the comments started to stir. A group of netizens, especially ARMY, expressed their outrage. They thought that Hoshi might be expressing his dissatisfaction with that year's results, or worse, indirectly criticizing BTS through his interactions with the post that implied the comparison.
The incident became more serious when some netizens revealed that the comment section under the video had negative words directed at BTS, even though the video and the account that posted it had been deleted. This raised suspicions that Hoshi may have known about the negative content but still clicked "like".
One netizen harshly commented: "No one said SEVENTEEN didn't deserve praise, but choosing a video with a caption that recalls failure and indirectly mentions BTS to interact with is too sensitive, especially for someone who has a public relationship with the group like Hoshi." However, many CARATs (SEVENTEEN's fandom name) spoke up to defend their idol. They said that Hoshi had absolutely no negative intentions. On the contrary, the "like" action simply came from pride in one of the group's most outstanding performances in their career.
A fan wrote: "Anyone who saw that stage would understand why Hoshi wanted to 'like'. It means the group's efforts and achievements, it has nothing to do with BTS." Many people also recalled that in the past, Hoshi had publicly expressed his admiration for BTS many times. He called the group a source of inspiration, especially in terms of stage design. Hoshi himself even appeared on the show Suchwita hosted by SUGA (BTS), showing the close relationship between the two groups. The times the members of both sides performed dance challenges together were also dug up as proof of this good relationship.
Up to now, Hoshi and his management company PLEDIS Entertainment have not made any official response. While fans of both sides continue to fight fiercely, the wave of requests to clarify the intention behind the "like" has not cooled down. It is worth mentioning that this incident has exposed a sensitive point that is always present in the Kpop community. Any small action of an idol can be interpreted in many ways, especially when it involves top groups like BTS.
This incident is a clear demonstration of the sensitivity of the Kpop fan community, where even the smallest interaction can explode into drama if placed in the wrong context. Whether Hoshi was truly unintentional or not, the power of social media to spread and interpret is something that cannot be underestimated. While waiting for an explanation from the people involved, the public can only continue to follow the "underground war" between two fandoms that are known to be strong and loyal.
