On stage, Hong Nga made the audience angry in many villain roles, and also took a lot of their tears with the role of a mother. In real life, she is also heavy with feelings of being a mother.
More than half a century of motherhood of four generations of artists
For more than half a century in the profession, artist Hong Nga's passion for reform has never ceased. In the remaining memories, she said that on that day, she always wished to return to the Thong Nhat troupe, standing next to People's Artist Ut Tra On, "even if I die, I will be satisfied".
That dream came true, opening a new stage in the career of artist Hong Nga. But that road is not smooth. The premiere night, the names Bach Tuyet, Phuong Lien were welcomed by the audience. But when they heard the two voices of Hong Nga, they were silent, interspersed with whispers: "I feel terrible", "so ugly"... Recalling, she only laughed, admitting that she was really ugly, because she was short, and weighs up to 60kg with a very round face.
Hong Nga as a teenager did not have a beauty concept, nor did she know how to improve her figure by wearing high heels. Her only asset is a good voice, just singing behind the velvet curtain, the audience applauded.
Hong Nga cried and lamented with People's Artist Ut Tra On. He advised her to switch to acting and she agreed. She clearly remembers the first time she dressed up as a woman, she looked in the mirror and asked People's Artist Ut Tra On: "Why do you look like a tiger on La De beer?". He scolded: "How can you draw such a big face?"
Leaving her regrets and worries behind, she stepped onto the stage confidently and proudly playing the role of mother in the opera Yen Ly Son, while People's Artist Ut Tra On played the son. Once, Hong Nga stood in the wrong position, making People's Artist Ut Tra On angry, cursing and mumbling on stage. She leaned in and said, "You should remember that I'm... being your mother". With the temperament of People's Artist Ut Tra On, she knew that she needed to hide immediately after the show to avoid "aftermath".
From this initial step, Hong Nga continues to be the "mother" of three more generations of artists, in which the second generation includes: People's Artist Bach Tuyet, People's Artist Le Thuy, Meritorious Artist Thanh Sang... Another class of artists plays. Hong Nga's child roles include: Meritorious Artist Vu Linh, Meritorious Artist Thoai My, People's Artist Thanh Ngan, Tai Linh, Thanh Hang... On the theater stage, she plays the mother of younger artists such as the late artist Anh Vu, Gia Bao...
The audience and juniors all call her a masterpiece, because any role can't make it difficult for Hong Nga. Many generations still tremble when watching Hong Nga play the role of Thanh De (Muc Lien Thanh De) and mother-in-law (Date of Destiny). Every smile, pout of Thanh De, or every sentence and gesture of the mother-in-law makes the audience angry.
Often, her roles, especially poisoned women, are often criticized by other artists for not playing, sometimes coming to Hong Nga's hands because they are too "evil". But she was not sad, seeing it as an opportunity to try. When playing many roles, it is also the time when opportunities are opened up more. Moreover, according to the terms of the contract signed at the time, she had to do all the choir assignments without being selected or denied.
And also Hong Nga, the role of teacher Lan (the play Tuyet love song), Mrs. Huong Ca (the play To Anh Nguyet), Mrs. Hau (the play White hair, mother flies) ... made the audience shed tears with their love for their children. la, the bitter, harsh must accept in life. The voice of the earth mixed with copper, deep but sad like the bell of Hong Nga becomes more expensive than ever.
The mother is heavy with real life
Hong Nga's father passed away when she was very young. Therefore, she always yearned for a full family home. But that dream is still unfinished, after three boat trips.
The first husband, when she had children, met once every three or three times, and finally Hong Nga realized that she was being taken advantage of. The second husband, together with three children, but she is still alone, because people do not love her, nor are they responsible. Until her last husband, she still suffered. Because of her love and patience, she could not overcome the "ghost yeast" in his person.
The female artist describes herself as an old and small boat, swaying in the waves over the years. She accepted it as fate.
Strong, brave, but sad stories of the past sometimes make her heartbroken. She still vividly remembers the days of plowing hard to have enough money to feed five mouths, but poverty still persisted. The female artist brought her two daughters to her friend. Three years later, that friend went to Switzerland to settle down, took her two children and was lost. She only knew that I had gone to Europe, but there was no sound.
She did not remember how many nights she lived in anxiety, fear, torment, blaming herself for this horrible memory. Who has been a mother will understand, when their children live or die, hungry or full, they don't know, will their hearts ever be at peace? For 18 years, she hid her tears inside to continue to raise the remaining children.
In 1996, during a European tour, thanks to the support of the audience, she found her son again, but Hong Nga's heart was broken because both did not accept her mother. The cold weather in a foreign land made her heart freeze. But a year later, one of the two children came to see Hong Nga perform, holding a rose for her mother. She was so happy she fainted. The following year, she returned to Vietnam to visit her grandmother. Although she could not speak Vietnamese to communicate with her mother, that was enough to ease her feelings for a long time. Hong Nga still has many worries and concerns, even though she understands that human hands cannot be strong enough to hold back time. Sometimes, two words "if only" are so bitter in a person's life.
Hong Nga rarely mentions old stories. She said that maybe when God was fair, she was successful with the role of mother on stage, but the role of mother in real life was not so lucky.
In 2020, she took her daughter to the US to settle down and find a job. She said that now I don't worry because I also have a stable job. Because of the COVID-19 epidemic, the female artist was stuck in the US for a long time, and only returned to Vietnam not long ago. Currently, she is living alone in Ho Chi Minh City. Hong Nga's biggest wish is to stay healthy so that she can see the audience often, for the whole life of the silkworm to release silk.
