Once a girl who had to do many jobs to make a living, comedian Kieu Linh is now a hotel owner in Da Lat and runs a dog rescue center. After her divorce, she chose to live alone and made a will at the age of 44 as a way to prepare for the future.
Kieu Linh was born in 1981 in Ho Chi Minh City. Before becoming a famous comedian, she had a difficult time making a living. She came from a well-off family, but economic turmoil forced Kieu Linh to become independent at a very young age. She worked as a waitress, supermarket saleswoman, coffee seller... to make ends meet.
During the day she works, at night she attends theater training classes. It is these experiences that have created a Kieu Linh who is confident, emotional and has depth in each role. She started her relationship with the comedy stage from supporting roles, gradually affirming her name through a series of skits and television shows such as "Tan Phong Nu Si", "Cuoc Goi Uon Oo", "Duyen Don Mien Tay", "Loi Song Vo Sai Mis"...
With more than two decades of artistic activities, Kieu Linh has left an impression on the audience with the image of a charming comedian, without scandals, always dedicated to her profession. She is a familiar face on many big stages such as Nu Cuoi Moi, Kich Sai Gon, Kich Hong Van... and often appears in Tet comedy shows and TV game shows.
Kieu Linh's special features are her characteristic husky voice, small but energetic figure. She not only acts as a comedian but also tries her hand at the role of director, screenwriter and content producer. "I don't want to just stand on stage, I want to understand and master the whole creative process," she once shared.
In recent years, Kieu Linh has rarely appeared in art programs. She only occasionally participates in projects of close colleagues, most recently a small role in the movie "Mai" by Tran Thanh (2024) and the upcoming "Nha Gia Tien" by Huynh Lap.
In a conversation with the press, Kieu Linh said she has limited her artistic activities to focus on business. After many ups and downs, the actress wants to spend time for herself and enjoy a peaceful life. "I no longer have the pressure of making a living. Now I act not for money, but because I miss my job," she said.
Despite appearing less, Kieu Linh still maintains a close relationship with her juniors in the profession. With Tran Thanh and Huynh Lap â young artists she loves â Kieu Linh always tries to appear, even if it is just a small role. "I want to have memories with them, and also a way to thank the audience who have loved me for many years," she said.
After a long time without acting, Kieu Linh admitted that she had difficulty returning, especially remembering her lines. After the COVID-19 pandemic, she suffered from memory loss, making learning lines more difficult. But for her, every time she stands in front of the camera is a time to relive her passion.
Currently, Kieu Linh lives in Ho Chi Minh City but often travels between three places: Saigon, Da Lat and Ba Ria - Vung Tau. She runs a small hotel in Da Lat and a dog rescue center with more than 300 abandoned dogs in Vung Tau. Her business takes up most of her time, forcing her to turn down many invitations to act in movies.
When she first opened the rescue center, Kieu Linh had to invest all her savings. "It was difficult, but this was my wish and my mission," she shared. Even though she had no children, Kieu Linh was still able to "become a mother" to hundreds of dogs. "If God did not give me a child, I would accept four-legged children," she said.
Many people advised her to adopt a child so that she would have someone to take care of her when she was old, but Kieu Linh refused. For her, children are not old-age insurance. "If you are filial, you will take care of your parents yourself. But don't put pressure on them. Each person has to take care of themselves," she shared.
In 2008, Kieu Linh married artist Mai Son â her teacher and companion in the profession. They were 20 years apart in age and were once an admired couple in Vietnamese showbiz. However, after 12 years of living together, they decided to divorce. Without children together, without fuss, they chose to part ways with respect.
At the time of their divorce, the two had disagreements that seemed unforgivable. But after the COVID-19 pandemic, Kieu Linh changed her mind, wanting to let go of all conflicts to live in peace. Currently, she and Mai Son consider each other as soul mates. "Mr. Son still helps me with big things in life that women find difficult to do. We are no longer husband and wife, but friends and colleagues," she shared.
Mai Son currently lives in Da Lat, helping Kieu Linh manage the hotel. His two children also live with her. They still go out to eat, watch movies, and even travel together â but "each stays in their own room and each goes home." For Kieu Linh, it's a gentle, non-binding form of care.
At the age of 44, Kieu Linh has already made a will. She clearly plans her assets for herself, her family and a part for charity work. "I am a far-sighted person. I am not afraid of death, I am only afraid of what I have built being abandoned," she said.
She shared that making a will was not a pessimistic act, but a proactive one. "I want everything to be clear. If one day I am no longer here, the rescue center will still have to continue. I don't want anyone to have to struggle because of me," she added.
Kieu Linhâs biggest wish right now is to have the health to continue working. Besides business, she still wants to return to art if there is a suitable project. In addition, she cherishes the idea of implementing a charity program to help those in difficult circumstances, without children â a wish she has kept throughout her decades in the profession.
"I used to be someone who had nothing, so I understand the feeling of being abandoned and deprived. I want to do something to help people like me," she said.
At the age of nearly 50, Kieu Linh spends time chanting Buddha's name, reading books, and... sleeping in. "Some days I sleep until 11 am. I want to make up for the years of having to work all kinds of jobs to earn a living.
