Singer Duong Minh Thu was born on July 24, 1982 in Que Vo, Bac Ninh. She has been passionate about singing since childhood and often participated in cultural activities at school. In 2004, Duong Thu Minh represented Que Vo district in a Quan Ho singing competition organized by Bac Ninh province and won a Silver Medal.
Sharing about this achievement, Minh Thu said she is very proud to be born and raised in Bac Ninh - where Quan Ho folk songs are recognized by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity.
However, due to family circumstances, she temporarily put her passion aside to go to Taiwan to work. Returning after 8 years, the desire to sing and stand on stage still burned within her. But in the end, Duong Minh Thu still decided to choose to stabilize her life, stabilize her finances, and then devote herself to music.
The female singer chose to work as a Chinese interpreter in Bac Ninh.
After her job was stable and her economy was more stable, in 2022, when she just turned 40, Duong Minh Thu accidentally learned about the program Golden Voice of Bolero Vietnam with singer Long Nhat as Chairman of the Board of Judges - the person she idolized since childhood, so she registered to participate.
At the competition, Duong Minh Thu was lucky to be on the team coached by singer Long Nhat and trained by her idol. Although she is an amateur singer who has never attended any music school, Duong Minh Thu said she is very confident in her singing voice.
"When I go to the competition, besides gaining experience and knowledge, I always want to wi.n th.e priz.e. I am very confident on stage," said the female singer.
It was that confidence that helped Duong Minh Thu overcome many rounds to reach the finals. And in the final round, she let her family and friends know so that everyone could come watch and cheer her on.
When her name was announced as the runner-up of Vietnam's Golden Voice of Bolero 2022, the female singer said she felt very happy: "When I won the prize, I thought to myself that I was born in Bac Ninh, so the first thing I wanted to do was spend the prize mone.y to return to my hometown to show gratitude to the place where I was born.
I organized the program "Leaving to return to my homeland" and gave 30 gifts to poor students who overcame difficulties," the female singer recalled.
Sharing more about singing traditional music but choosing to participate in the Bolero contest, Duong Minh Thu said: "I was born and raised in Bac Ninh, my voice is more inclined towards Quan Ho singing, but when listening to Bolero music, there are love stories and lyrics that are like my life. Gradually, it seeps into my bloo.d, making me yearn to sing those songs. It's like borrowing those songs to express my feelings."
After the competition, Duong Minh Thu continued her work as a Chinese interpreter, and she also invested a lot of effort and mone.y i.n her passion for singing.
After more than 2 years of winning the runner-up prize of Vietnam Bolero Golden Voice, the female singer has released nearly 200 music videos, collaborating with many singers such as: Long Nhat, Quang Teo, Nguyen Phu Qui, Ho Huynh Duc, Tran Xuan... Each such MV costs her at least 10 million for a song.
On the afternoon of April 20, singer Duong Minh Thu officially released a music video called Thoi em ve di em (composed by Cao Nhat Minh - Thi Phuong) in Bac Ninh city.
Regarding the decision to make the music video "Thoi em ve di em", Duong Minh Thu said that before, she mainly made stage MVs, so she wanted to have more outdoor products to diversify the colors and also mark a new milestone for her singing career.
However, during the process, she also encountered many difficulties and worries about realizing her wish. There was a time when Duong Minh Thu wanted to give up but luckily, singer Phu Qui connected her with director Dong Quoc Hung to make this musical film.
The musical film "Let's go home" was invested by the female singer with a budget of "half a car" with the duet of singer Nguyen Phu Qui. The film tells a love story of the past - a beautiful young lady (played by Minh Thu) falls in love with a poor ferryman (played by Phu Qui) but because her parents have promised to marry her to a rich young man, the budding love between the two has to be put on hold. The young lady obeys her parents to fulfill her filial duty, repaying the rich family who helped her.
Although the love story of the previous generation, but for Duong Minh Thu, somewhere there is also a bit of brokenness, suffering from her own love that makes her afraid of love until now. But thanks to that, she sings more passionately, acts more emotionally.
"Since that relationship, I've been very sensitive and skeptical about anyone talking about love. I just worry about life and being independent in everything," she confided.
When asked Minh Thu "Are you pressured by family and friends about marriage and children?", she said that at first she thought a little, but since learning about Buddhism, she thinks more simply and believes that everything in life requires fate, and should not be forced.
Sharing the reason for inviting singer Nguyen Phu Qui to participate in this music film project, Duong Thu Minh said that she was lucky to have the enthusiastic support of her senior. Not only singing and acting, Phu Qui also co-wrote the script with Minh Thu and directed with Dong Quoc Hung.
"At first we only knew each other on Facebook but then through a mutual friend we had the chance to meet in Saigon. Later, I invited Mr. Qui to film some songs together, he was very enthusiastic so I really appreciated it.
With the musical film Thoi em ve di em, this was my first time acting, like a blank page so it was extremely difficult, but Mr. Qui guided and instructed me a lot.
We are similar in that we both started out as amateurs with a passion for art, so we can sympathize with each other. Mr. Qui, a national player who won the Mekong Delta championship 5 times and the national championship 2 times, turned to singing and won the Solo and Bolero runner-up prize. He was also an actor, so he has a lot of experience," Minh Thu shared about his relationship with singer Nguyen Phu Qui.
